I’ve just done a bit of research into Ryan Clarke. He would seem to be a worthwhile buy low kind of play. With Polec and Gaff potentially going into the North side, there won’t be much opportunity for Clarke and we should be able to get him for a straight swap with Newman (or thereabouts).

The hard-running midfielder powered the Eastern Ranges into the TAC Cup Grand Final this year with a brilliant finals series, which topped a consistent season. Clarke averaged 31 disposals for the Ranges across the year, and with his bigger body, running strength and ability to push forward and kick goals, he should be able to play some senior AFL football next year. The Roos have been linked to Clarke at their first pick, where he might go, but he's also a chance to be available here where they can add one of the draft's best gut-runners.
Twomey projected him to be picked at 30. Chris Doerre AKA Knightmare had him ranked 15 on his power rankings.
Clarke then played 6 games in his first year North fans going nuts after his first 3 games totalling 70 possessions (21, 22, and 27).
This year he has played 19 games and was a decent accumulator, regularly getting 20+ possessions.
We have a track record of development and so in our system, he seems to be a low risk, high reward play.Comment

I originally made some predictions that we’d land Gaff and Moore but I’m thinking that Gaff is not likely and perhaps we are building more of a chest for next year. I am also a bit scared of the price we’d have to pay for Gaff. He would be awesome for the now but he is high risk for years 5, 6, and 7 when he is the wrong side of 30 and still costing top dollar.Comment

I'm also wondering about whether we are just banking the savings for something down the track. Next year we'll definitely have retirements and no Tippett money in our cap.

If we don't use pick 13 in some player deal I reckon we'll look to do a pick swap to increase points available. All these scenarios assume Pies winning this afternoon, Lynch compo and Gaff compo.
We have picks 13, 32, 38, pick 13 will only cover a Blakey bid at pick 9 or later, any earlier and our pick 32 gets canabalised and pushed back. In all of the trades below we could also end up with a later pick created. So we could trade pick 13 to -
Gold Coast for 28 & 31 total points 1283 covers pick 8
WCE for 22 & 38 total points 1310 covers pick 7
Crows for 21 & 39 total points 1324 covers pick 7
Carlton for 26 & 27 total points 1432 covers pick 6
Port for 23 & 29 total points 1468 covers pick 6
I'm hopeful that Blakey may drift a few spots as others rise up the boards on the back of strong end of seasons, some of the SA boys in SANFL finals.Comment

My understanding is it would be wise to use pick 13 to trade in a player and use trade outs to increase our points to help cover Blakey.
As an aside, if we do let Hanners go for a future second rounder that would be the same as we got for Sam Murray last year.Comment

No it won't. Last year we traded Murray and our 2018 3rd round pick for the Pies' 2018 2nd round pick. Given where we and Collingwood finished this year (or will finish, in the case of the Pies), that's an upgrade of 12 or 13 spots, ignoring the impact of any free agency compensation picks that fall at the end of the second round.Comment

Good point Liz. I forgot about the pick swap.
Collingwood were 13th last year, so only 3 places higher than St Kilda, who will surely improve next year though I suspect not as much.
If it's true that Steven May is going to Collingwood (leaving aside the hypocrisy of Eddie etc), that would need them to free up cap space, which might mean they'll all-of-a-sudden be keen to trade out Darcy Moore.
The sooner we can get this annoying Grand Final business out the way and get on with trade week the better.Comment
