If Sutcliffe and Townsend are both in the frame I'd say we're definitely scoping out DFAs as a backstop in case of a high Blakey bid.

If you look back a couple of pages, I think we collectively came to the position (after I stumbled) that we had room on the senior list to
-draft Blakey
- draft three more players in the ND (which is what Beatson has indicated the club plans to do)
- upgrade Ronke
- either take a DFA OR upgrade Fox
Now we know that Fox has been upgraded.
There are technically another couple of senior spots that could be used if the club chooses to expand its list to 40. But it has run with 38 for many years now so that seems reasonably unlikely.
In terms of available spots on the rookie list, we can carry 4-6 Cat A rookies (6 if we have 38 on the senior list; 4 if we have 40 on the senior list) and up to 3 Cat B rookies.
Bell was a Cat B rookie last year. I have no idea if he is allowed to remain as a Cat B rookie (and if he is, whether that's what the club has elected to do). Pink and Amartey occupy two other spots.Comment

I like the point that over the next season it could make sense to have a bigger list given that we most likely have the cap space. As against that there are two other ways we could use the cap space:
1. Pay under the cap (not generally a good strategy) so that we can pay over the cap (up to 105%) next year and be even more able to jag a big fish.
2. Bring forward some player contract payments so we have less salary cap pressure in future seasons.
Any theories why we might be preferring Sutcliffe to Tommy Sheridan who the Dockers are also delisting after having drafted him in 2011 and who is even more of a gun runner and who was a first round draft pick? Sutcliffe is a backman and Sheridan a mid. Perhaps we are looking to get an improved version of Marsh for depth? Maybe it's more about character/leadership/training standards issues, as this must be extra-important when we are looking to fill a gap in experience level at our club? However either player seems to be a very hard worker to reach such elite levels of fitness. All opinions are not equal. There are too many options these days to work out what's really going on with someone like Maibaum. It looks to me that we would like to push Maibaum to the rookie list, but it's hard to know what happens next. It would have seemed easier to delist Pink and take him again as a rookie and keep Fox as a third year rookie, which would have left an additional spot for Maibaum. I doubt if there would be much interest in Maibaum anyway, especially if we committed to redraft him as a rookie. Maibaum seemed to have finished off the year well, but so did Jake Brown.
Foote may also have been told that would likely be rookied. It think he's a better prospect than whoever we'd take on our last rookie pick. Or maybe he's keen on joining his mates a Sydney Uni.
Picks 26+38 come to 1194 point, a bit more than we need if Blakey goes pick 9. We would only drop back to pick 42 with pick 39 if Blakey gets bid at pick 8, and pick 41 will be used by Collingwood for a Quaynor, so we actually wouldn't drop any spots regardless of whether Blakey goes pick 8 or pick 9. That said, we could trade pick 33 for a future pick and take 3 in the ND instead of 4, leaving a spot open for a DFA. All this assumes that we want to keep the primary list at 38.
See. Once you start talking options, it just goes on forever.
in 2014 Sutcliffe was name Freo's best player in the finals. Going from that to being delisted is a long way down. I'm not sure what happened. Jacob Townsend would be an interesting addition. We know he's as tough as they come. I can't see either one making the best 22 though.
I can't tell you what it is, but there's something about Tom Liberatore that suggests he could become a key position player.Last edited by Ludwig; 29 October 2018, 04:21 PM.Comment

Giants considering Sheridan: Giants could throw ex-Docker an AFL lifeline - AFL.com.au. I hope that's not why we're looking at Sutcliffe and that it is us with our noses in front not the other way around. GWS have Matt de Boer but we have Kirky to get the inside mail and to lure them in.All opinions are not equal. Libba junior... no.
He will pay for the sins of his father.
I will personally boo him.Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
