I'd prefer if we went for Knight over Taylor. Taylor couldn't make the Lions best 22 over Cam Rayner when he was stinking it up, which is a worry.

I reckon he will end up being a Rose 2.0. Will kill it in the NEAFL side, but won't translate that form at AFL level. Pass.

Can Raynor and Lewis Taylor play different roles. Raynor plays more as a medium forward, often providing an alternate marking target over the talls, not as a crumbling small. He also pinch hits in the midfield.

Lewie was kept our of the side by the dual rise of McCarthy and Cameron. Both were very good and more importantly, injury free. I think a better gauge of what Lewie could potentially do for us is the seasons he had prior to Cameron having an extended, injury free run and the arrival of McCarthy. Explosive acceleration and good pace, very much like Papley. He didn't get rising star over Bont for nothing.

That doesn't mean we didn't have a substandard list. The Swans of the early 1990s had problems with player retention.

We also turned over a lot of players. The Sydney side that got belted by North in 1993 had only five players that also lost to North in the 1996 Grand Final: Mark Bayes, Daryn Cresswell, Paul Kelly, Dale Lewis and Troy Luff.

The VFL is better understood as a secession by the power clubs from the less financially viable clubs - rather than a new competition. Much as many Victorians have spent most of the last decade calling for GWS and GC to be dumped because they're a "drain" on the AFL competition.
The Saints were a very surprising, and hopelessly inadequate inclusion in the VFL, they weren't even a moderately successful VFA side.
At the time it was often speculated that they were only included so as to exclude Port, who've always had a somewhat unsavoury reputation.
In hindsight it's been suggested that the inclusion of such an enlikely team was to ensure that none of the other sides, all of whom were VFA powerhouses went through a season winless - at which they have been phenomenally successful.

To return to the topic of this thread, I am a bit surprised that neither Pink nor Hurst have made it, if that is what's happened. The former had a lot of fans on RWO and seemed to hold the ressies defence together, while the latter got better and better as the season went on.

You would’ve watched far me of Taylor than me , but from what I’ve seen he hasn’t really improved all that much since his rookie season . He came in read to play and a a had very good first season , but what he’s been able to achieve since has been pretty lacklustre. His best goal tally in a full season is 21 . Bont is 10 times the player he was in his debut season , Taylor maybe only 1.5 the player he was back then.
I’d be happy to give him a chance without having too high expectations , he does possess pace which we will need if Papley and Jones both leave.

Also just read on AFL site Collingwood are looking at offloading some players this trade period to prepare for their huge task of trying to re-sign Degoey, Moore , Grundy and Pendlebury next year . I seriously hope we’re enquiring about Sier . Swap for Cameron and we can throw in a pick in the 40’s.

Don't be too hasty! They haven't been cut either and may well yet be retained, although there will be more players delisted. I would guesstimate two more. Could be Maibaum and Wicks. Could be Menzel. Who knows? Not me.

After the 2018 season Lewis Taylor was rated by Champion Data as an Above Average General Forward, think that's what we need to judge him by. Much rather him that Riley Knight who strikes me as a list clogger type.

The Deal for Tim Kelly has two firsts but they are/likely to be late firsts. In the Daniher situation we are looking at top 10 firsts, a much different situation. Think there may be some pick shuffling goes on prior to a Daniher deal getting done or if Dodo is a complete turd, no deal, I'm happy to wait and take pick 5 (and 9/10) to the draft, give me Serong & Kemp.

When the AFL put a trading ban on the Swans, they inadvertently created a precedent that can now be used to save the Suns. The AFL should put a 5 year limited trading ban on the Suns. The Suns should be banned from trading out any 1st round draft pick for the next 5 years. That should stop the bleeding. If it's good enough to punish the Swans for nothing, why not use it save the Suns and protect their huge investment in GC.


From Cal Twomey's latest rankings. He has Jackson at #14. Chris Doerre has him going to NM at pick 9, so could miss out anyway, as Calton's pick that we anticipate coming for Papley falls after North's pick.

Agree that Bont's upward trajectory exceeds Lewie!

One of the main criticisms of Lewie up here has been his lack of endurance. It has limited his growth as a player that he hasn't been able to pinch hit in the midfield significantly.

But he has acceleration and pace and could do significantly better playing off better talls. Hipwood is a bit hit and miss, McStay average and Big O still raw. He should get better opportunities with Buddy, McCartain, Reid and ? Daniher. Hopefully he could improve his fitness under out trainers.

If we get him at the right price, there's enough upside, and at worse, I reckon he will be another Ronke.

Harsh, but fair. Joe has played 11 games of footy in 2 years. We should not be paying handsomely to get him. Pick him up next year when it won't cost us an arm and a leg. We need strong-bodied, engine room midfielders, not injury-prone tall forwards.
