2020 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

With Matt Kreuzer retiring I don't think there's much chance of De Koenig leaving Carlton. Richmond have signed a 213cm ruckman prospect. With the Covid rules violation, Coleman-Jones must be on the trading block. He might go cheaply and is good target for us. I would prefer Chol, but Coleman-Jones looks more gettable.

I find this to be such an unwarranted negative reading of these players. It's okay to say that we don't have enough information to make an informed assessment at this time. This would be fair enough, given how little AFL exposure they've had. But why put such a negative slant on it?

My assessment would be:

Stoddart: (6 games, 2 this year). Has the speed, skill and hardness we like in a player. Was a steal at pick 53, as he was tapped to go in the late 20s by most draft gurus. He was unfortunate to have a season ending back injury in his last and best game (16 possessions). Looking forward to him challenging for a spot in the senior side next year.

Ling: (3 games). Lost the better part of 2 years with injuries. Finally seems to be over the worst of it and ready to begin a promising career. He has similar attributes as Stoddart, including both being left footers. Expecting good things if he can stay off the injury list.

Stephens: (6 games). Another left footer with speed and skill. Showed good improvement over the stretch of his 6 games. Has a promising future.

Gould: I think we will see Gould in one of these final 2 games. Steve Johnson said he would get a go in an interview a few weeks back. Many had him as a top 10 pick in last year's draft, but seemed to drop when rumours got out that he had blown up to over 100 kgs. I'm hopeful that he can be a grade A player in due course.

I suspect we'd love to get a full pre-season into Gould and then be able to train him more against our forwards. Not an ideal year to develop the first year players.

I must say, I'm not really sure why there's such a clamour for him to be selected. The match committee has demonstrated a willingness to blood youngsters if they've been happy with the training and play in scratch matches.

I agree with you. I don't know what all the fuss is about. I was thrilled that we got him in the draft. He was one of my favourites, but agreed with most that we should select a midfielder at pick 5. I was very surprised he lasted till pick 26. I'd like to see him get a game, but I wouldn't be all that bothered if he doesn't. I don't think it reflects on his future as a player.

If he again asks to go then there is a good chance we will get quite a bit in return for him. I doubt that his trade value will ever be higher than now, and Carlton are desperate given Eddie Betts is struggling. A first rounder for 2020 and 2021 for him would be very tempting.

The Papley trade ( assuming we got two first rounders ) is enticing if we were at the beginning of a rebuild. But We are l, what 3 years in?, and he will likely be our leading goal kicker two years running. We are likely to get 2 first rounders ( our first and Campbell pick ) this year and a very good second rounder in Gulden this year. His trade value is never higher I agree, but our need for another high pick this year is low. Paps is a guy we want along for the ride, he’s only 23 and he’s a barometer. Let’s re assess next year or the year after, he’s got at least 3 years left in the contract.

Agree re Stephens; I was a little surprised he was dropped, and I'd be pretty surprised if he doesn't come in this week.

Thats a coincidence, I was just thinking the other day, how disappointing Jack Viney has become. Showed so much promise a little while ago.

Could be related to the team performance, so may be disillusioned and want to leave, but he's a favourite melbourne son, so all hell will break loose if he leaves.

I kind of think its hard to read too much into the mental state of players (and desire to leave) this year with all the chaos.

We are currently at 46. If we are to bring in 4 players through the draft/trading, that will mean a cut of 10 players from our list. I really don't know how that may work in terms of current contract and whether those with contracts ending after 2020 are safe or if they can be paid out???

Whatever the case, the players who have contracts ending this year would have to be more likely to be under the pump. From what I understand, this involved 19 players. I have given my thoughts below.

LIKELY DELIST

1. Joel Amartey - 3rd year rookie already so would need to be upgraded anyway or redrafted.
2. Jack Maibaum - Been on our list for years and has been unlucky with injuries. Yet to debut.
3. Harry Reynolds - 2nd year rookie. Can be re-rookied. Yet to debut. Under normal circumstance, may survive but with list cuts is a likely cut.
4. Ben Ronke - Have a few gone past him? I prefer Wicks and Taylor as small, pressure forwards. Possible late pick trade value or delist.
5. Brady Rowles - I don't know much about him and he hasn't been given much of a chance due to Covid. Under normal circumstance, may survive but with list cuts is a likely delist.
6. Ryley Stoddart - Ludwig is a big fan and under normal circumstances, I think he would survive but with list cuts, I think, he is a likely delist. Happy to move him to the possibles.

1. Zac Foot - Showed promise in debut but we do have a number of his "type". possible cut
2. Michael Knoll - 2nd year rookie. Can be re-rookied. If we don't acquire another ruck, he may hold on.

1. Sam Naismith - I think he should be medically retired freeing up a list space.

Pretty fair assumptions there is going to be massive amount of players across all clubs delisted if those list numbers are true . Of your list I would think thurlow survives in place of Clarke , purely on his kicking skills only . But fair to say some tough decisions are going to be made come seasons end

I'd also do the switcheroo with Thurlow and Clarke for the reasons listed above. Have to feel for all the fringe players and staff who have been stood down. Limbo sucks. I would like the AFL to be more forthcoming about list sizes and what the soft cap will be next year.

I think we will delist grassy knoll. He was brought in as a backup ruckman, and we've needed one, and he still hasn't got a game.
That means, they had a look, but he's just not good enough.
