2020 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

If we take a broader perspective, we are going to add 3 first round players in this draft, including 2 rated in the top 8 by most accounts. That's a significant injection of talent. We are in a very delicate situation going forward, trying to retain these players as they go through their early development years. We will need to find playing opportunities for them if we want to keep them once their 1st contract comes to an end.

It's a bit painful to lose out on so many trade deals in recent times, but we are currently in a salary cap squeeze for next year, which will be followed by more TPP pain when we want to extend the contracts of good players we've drafted in the past couple of years as well as this year. We have a lot of players entering their prime who will also be looking for their big payout deal.

The road to on field success is a Moneyball solution. A club needs cheap players who play above their pay scale.

I don't think it was the CEO, Football Manager or List Manager who would have initiated or pushed for any of these moves. If the coach doesn't value the players that highly, then that dictates how hard to go to re-sign the player, and/or whether you are open to trading them out.

Longmire clearly doesn't rate Aliir - the last 4 years is evidence of that (I don't think he had that high of an opinion of Zac Jones either) - so whether any of us agree with that assessment or not, nothing was going to magically change next year. So we may as well trade out a player if they are not in the coach's plans, and you can understand the player being open to moving now. The reality is Aliir was not going to reach the potential many supporters believe he has under Longmire - I guess we'll see how he goes at Port and that might be the evidence either way.

Melican is more the style of key defender Longmire wants - hence the new 3-year contract for him. I don't see the Aliir move as a salary dump - our cap would be tight, but just as much the squeeze for list spots and making the tougher calls on players who realistically are fringe players. That might give us more flexibility to look at some delisted free agents who suits our needs more.

I have no problems trading Aliir but the value is low. We should have got more than a future 2nd rounder for him since he was contracted. Aliir is good but was certainly at his peak. I don’t think we were going to see any more improvement in him. I would ask the questions

Is he replaceable in our team. Currently yes since we have enough defenders except maybe not many tall enough.
Do we have a gap in our list that needs addressing straight away? Yes - Ruck
Do we have anyone who can do his job? Swing man- Yes. Sam Reid

Aliir sees that he can play in a winning team and maybe get to play the finals - we have enough time on our hands to buy a player like him in the future.

I am hoping that players such as Kaiden Brand and Barry O Connor fill his void and Hickey does a decent job in Ruck. If that happens we would be more competitive in 2021 than having no Ruck and having Aliir on our team.

Yes. It's funny, because most pundits think we have one of the best young lists in the comp and it's getting much stronger this year. As Steve said above, if players who aren't in the coach's best team have some trade value, it makes sense to at least look into it.

We had to sign Heeney and Mills a few years back to ward of the kangaroos . I bet that’s where most of the salary issues are . Also Rampe , Parker Lloyd would be on decent coin , add Buddy in the mix and it’s a perfect storm . Look at Collingwood there in a world of hurt due to back end contracts

Yes true, but we also lost McVeigh, Grundy, Smith and Jack the year before and Hannebery and Jones gone too - Mitchell before that.

Of the top of my head I can't think of one player we've brought in the last 2 years who should be on more than 400K.

He got offered 4 years by Port . Of course he was going to take that everyday of the week . It was initially 3 and they have now upped it to 4 to get him to request a trade. 4 years contract for Alir is dangerous in my opinion

I'm not against Aliir going. He was viewed by our match committee as a fringe player and this was unlikely to change, despite the feelings of RWO posters.

What I'm disappointed about is the trade. Future 2nd rounder? We're most probably going to hand it over to WC for Hickey or Vardy, both of whom will likely be delisted when their contracts are up. Aliir for these 2 is an awful deal. We just always get screwed over in trades. I can't think of one in recent times that was definitely in our favour.

Maybe there could have been some steak knives on the side, but for mine the value isn't too far off what it should me. I hope he kicks on at Port, I really do, but I wonder if he has already broadly reached his overall pick.

What an absolute joke.... kind of wish we had Dodoro to negotiate on our behalf to extract a better pick from PA. AA will be a phenomenal pick for them and PA have paid unders.

KB and SD are great for picking players from a draft but our trading department leaves a lot to be desired... but perhaps Charlie Gardiner and TH may need a reality check in letting a contracted KPD go for a lousy pick. It is a disgrace that we as a club are bending over.

I am sure this can be foreseen by the recruiters in 2013 when we recruited Buddy on then money he is currently getting. Its sad that the TPP hasnt gone up as much as they were probably hoping that it would to help with the salary cap. I reckon, they knew it and the planned for it. Not all plans go well and we are seeing a bigger dip than we anticipated.

But I reckon if we are bottom 3-4 again next year - we will risk players leaving swans - Hayward, Rowbottom, Florent, Papley especially. So the need for fixing the holes is important than hanging on to players who are fringe players.

I think if we get Hickey and train him well with Dean Cox, we may get the best out of him - which may not be excellent but I would rather have a consistent Ruckman than a week to week ruckman that would disrupt the development of midfielders. We get Buddy on park for 10- 12 games next year - and add Elijah Hollands, Braeden Campbell and Gulden - we would do well. Need a solid preseason from some of these youngsters and I reckon we can beat a few top teams next year.

What's the point of drafting top notch youngsters when we have shown that we are incapable of holding on to our players when they get their heads turned by other clubs? It's just an endless cycle

Well run clubs don't lose players they want to keep, we do not fit into this category

It seems that our list manager is uncapable of proper planning.. this is not KB's doing or SD's doing.... You question what is going on there in Sydney. Absolutely dumbfounded. we are bringing in a hasbeen (who never actually made it and rode off the coattails of others in the WCE team). And we are dudded in terms of the trade

I'm gutted AA has left. Let's watch him flourish in Port colours next year. If we use that future second rounder to pick up Hickey and not because we have someone better brewing (someone put forward Grundy's name recently) then we have become a joke. Our rebuild will go on for a long time. Sydney is not a destination club anymore. Prediction = lots of pain ahead!
