It was like a different country.
Edible, fairly priced, variety of real food, staff who had some understanding of what they were presenting.
    Hope Merivale resembles the Trumper.
As you all know, I'm an infrequent visitor to the SCG, and in years gone by the food as been like the leftovers from a hot dog truck that was at the easter show... reheated in june.
But a game i went to this year, the food was of pretty good quality. Maybe the food improved in 2021?

Cal Twomey's latest Phantom Rankings have dropped (always at the last minute): Cal Twomey's Phantom Form Guide: Top draft prospects' August ranking (afl.com.au).

We're likely to have pick 14 and there's some prospect that either Mac Andrew or Jye Amiss could still be on the board at our pick. They'd both be good pick ups I reckon. If not we could potentially trade down the order for a good deal at the last moment.

Andrew and Amiss likely to be gone by our pick.

How about trying to trade our picks 12 and 31 to GC for picks 19 and 21, then go for Conway (25) and Van Rooyen(27). We still get a Ruckman (McCartin's cousin) and a key defender (who looked very good in the U19 Champs).

We’re a couple of years too late on both (not saying we shouldn’t draft them though). I wonder if there are any mature age prospects available??

So the Luke Parker impasse is still on going. Says to me that our cap is as tight as a fish's but hole. I would imagine giving him 700k for 2 years would not be a problem but with all our young talent, we must be concerned about 3-4 years down the track.

I want him to stay but financially for the club, it would help solve the looming issue of re-signing our young talent. An on ball contingent of Mills, Hewett, JPK, Rowbottom and Warner still looks very strong especially with Paps, Heeney and JMac to pinch hit. With Reid to either be let go or stay on substantially less and Buddy's big deal to finish, it would free up over 2 million in cap space to re-sign our youngsters.

The down side to all this is the cultural hit to the club as well as the hit to our on field strength. We would need someone to step up massively to fill the void. But I suspect if we re-sign Parks to the contract he wants, we will shed some talent, possibly even local academy players in a couple of years time.

This is a real conundrum for the club, hence I suspect why we haven't locked him up.

We have a shortage of key position prospects on our list. We have to keep drafting decent prospects in this area. Lets not go down the St Kilda path of trying to plug holes. We don't need to draft any midfielders this draft. Our first round pick should be on a key position player.

If we go for a mature age player we can get Paddy McCartin for nicks.

I suspect nothing will happen with parker for a while longer - at least until we know about next year's cap.

One thing i hope we don't do is overrate our list/position overall. Yes we made great strides up the ladder this year, but we should still be seeing in general ourselves in the 'list building' phase and not the 'topping up' stage - unless there are really obvious cheap pick ups that can fill a gap or two. We aren't at that point yet.

Just to be sure I understand how the draft works for players who are on our NEAFL list how is the following possible and if it isn’t in fact nothing what is the actual real cost to us ?

McCartin was delisted in 2019. I'm not sure of the rule, but I think he can be signed as a free agent, as he's been out of the game for 2 years. I'm not really sure of the rule, but I think there were similar situations where the player could just sign on with cub of choice. So others on RWO have made similar comments, also without stating the specific rule. So it would be good if someone actually was positive about Paddy's status.

My point is was that we need a KD and developing ruckman now, thus they needed to have been drafted 2-4 seasons ago

Any KD or ruckman drafted this year isn’t going to be ready for another 3-4 seasons

Though it's a bit of a concern Parker's not shored up yet, im quite confident he will stay and the club will appease him. He is a sensational player. A superstar who made the All Australian 40-man squad this year, heavy favourite to win his 3rd Bob Skilton Medal and a brilliant leader... believe me there would be clubs all over him!! We would be hearing the rumours.. Cerra to Carlton, Hewett to Carlton, McLean to St Kilda.. these kinds of rumours... we've heard nothing! So I don't think anyone is chasing him... why would that be?? Well.... maybe because they know he is simply not gettable

But we can't afford a ready made good player now and we already have enough fill ins, so we don't have a lot of choice.

Our salary cap situation could be so bad that we have to let go of both Hewett and Parker, as well as Reid, just to get some breathing space for all the contracts coming up this year and over the next several years.

We may just have to depend of the youth brigade to carry us through and develop on the job as quickly as they can. I think we have both the quantity and quality of players, but they are probably too young to get us a premiership next year or even 2023.

                              That’s pessimistic

We were capable of pinching one this year but for our errant kicking

IMHO I would call Ludwig's assessment realistic.
We performed well above general expectation to reach the finals, but fell (narrowly) at the first hurdle. I don't feel that we were close to pinching one. Hopefully in a couple of years...
