Cal Twomey tweet reported on Fox footy.

I think these were three good picks. Again hindsight would be a good thing
2013 is similar to our picks this year: 16, 31, 39 (though these will bounce around a bit due to the father-son matching of bids).

Also, Jones is a brother of a good player, and Nankervis is a ruck. Wouldn't it be interesting if we repeated history a bit and drafted another brother of a good player (Corey Warner) and another ruck (Conway)? Two players who want to play for us would greatly reduce that dreaded go-home factor.

As for the idea of drafting a pure ruck after we've got Ladhams from Port, I see it like this. There's a bit of a trend lately where clubs have multiple tall forwards. Having an additional ruck gives us more options to place into defence.

The other draft pick could be an intercept defender.

A great point TB, though one i think you could consider yourself. It was not a few pages ago you were writing off developing players such as Gould, Rowbottom, Florent and Stephens as early-round busts..

I say let things unfold as they may. There's no shame when all is said and done and a player is delisted or traded away in accepting they were busts; but there's a lot to lose in prematurely labelling someone a bust before it's all said and done.. they may just surprise you.. many thought Harry, Reid, Robbie Fox and Hickey would be busts.. they have lasted a lot longer than they could've if we judged them off the first few years of their careers and culled them..

Very excited to see what McAndrew can do. Young ruck, rising through the ranks. Big pre-season will be needed. That goes for many of our cygnets.

We have 4 ruckmen on our list now, including a very good one in Hickey. Ladhams sees himself as a ruckman, He certainly has the size. We should remember that Sinclair was a forward before becoming more of a ruckman later in his career. I would give Ladhams a chance to see how he develops. He's only 23. We certainly can wait another year to reevaluate our ruck situation. It's looking better now than it has for many years.

Paddy McCartin opting out of the draft is a sure sign that he's going to be listed by us. It's almost time to say welcome aboard Paddy.

I just had a thought. If we have Buddy, Paddy and Logan as our starting forward line, all 3 are top 5 draft picks. That doesn't happen too often, I bet.

Did he indeed. Then the Saints deal must have been much more. Our contract at that time then would have been @@@@e anyway. We lost some good players because we could not match opposing clubs deals.

He looked great in his first few appearances for Manly. I'm optimistic he'll progress to being a good VFL ruck this year.
He has only played around 15-20 games of senior footy I believe. The fact he's from rugby will mean that although gangly, he should relish the physicality. Yeah he's a longshot, but I'm optimistic.

I'm not expecting to draft Conway despite his wanting to play for us, for reasons similar to those you stated. However, he could be a useful pickup in a trade a few years later, after Hickey and Sinclair retire.

My remarks were more to highlight some similarities to the 2013 and 2021 draft picks.

Assuming we end up listing Paddy McCartin, it would be a very interesting forward line. However, I'm expecting Paddy to spend some time playing in defence.

I imagine the club is only contemplating recruiting McCartin with a defensive spot in mind. We now have rather a large complement of tall forwards (of varying age, quality, style and experience).

I hope you're correct, certainly no skin off my nose if he makes it and proves me wrong. Interestingly, I think Hickey played rugby and volleyball as a teenager (pretty sure it wasn't at an elite level either) and was identified very late as an AFL prospect. Might explain why it is only now in his 30s that he's hitting his peak.

I think if deemed to fit our list needs, we could still take Conway, especially if he slides to our 3rd rounder. Naismith and Sinclair to retire, Hockey maybe a couple of seasons left, McAndrew slow burn, should be plenty of room for him.

I said its too early to judge Gould , and didnt say Florent and Stephens were busts , just they need to improve

It's well known Membrey left for more senior opportunities

IIRC Membrey was behind Goodsey in our forward line. Tim went for better opportunities. Goodsey went prematurely because too many jerks attended the footy and behaved like idiots

If Conway slips to our 3rd pick I'd definitely be all for taking him. By the time he'd be really competing for first ruck position, Ladhams will be closer to 28/29 and Hickey, Sinclair, Naismith will be long gone. It's definitely playing the long game but with our current list, unless we take a tall defender here, any player taken at this 3rd pick will likely wait a few years to get regular game time anyway. Plus, if it turns out that Ladhams is the second coming and we don't need him, I reckon rucks hold their draft value more than other positions so even if he plays hardly any games, we will still be able to trade him in the ruck merry go round for a 2nd rounder in 2026.

OK its VERY early but I will go all out.

If McCartin senior has a full pre season and we draft him I expect him to play next year. And do well.
