As he says, it's only the knee, unlike other rucks his age the rest of the body is low mileage.

He'll get a modest one year contract while we ease him back into game time and assess from there.

I would let him go. If he can find another club, I'd be happy for him. Otherwise, I would offer him a spot on our VFL team and see if he makes it through the year. There's always the mid season draft if he does well.

        Maybe a rookie list slot?

It’s ridiculous to even consider him for another year, he should’ve been cut 4 seasons ago.

It’s unfortunate but his body isn’t up to AFL, let’s not waste a list spot and more salary cap space

Balderdash. Talented players his size don’t grow on trees. He is ten times more likely to represent us at the top level than speculative picks like McAndrew. He’s worth giving another year at least.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

In the VFL prelim between the Suns and the Sharks, Zac Foot has shown that he's good enough to get back on a list. Possibly BOG, probably the quickest player on the ground.

I think it would be madness to let him go now. Why would the Swans invest so much time in him....then to just let him go? Does not make sense. He's risky yes but I think the Swans know what they're doing.

                  Completely agree with this. ????

The Swans simply made a bad mistake signing an injured player to a 3 year contract. So now that we've flushed good money down the toilet, our investment is so great that we can only justify our mistake by repeating it.

Someday, someone will advise not to throw good money after bad, but maybe that day has yet to come.

Naismith has averaged 3 games a year in his long career with the Swans. We've probably spent enough on his medical expenses to have a new wing named after him at Royal Prince Albert Hospital. He just turned 30. If we give him a 7 year contract, he might become a 50 game player. The big payoff is just around the corner.

Sam could seriously play, but I think this is the right approach.

The old fashioned ruckman was saved by the ruck nomination rule, but only temporarily. The tide is changing. The ruckman going into the future is just a tall mobile player. Their influence on the stoppage will depend on how the AFL wants to write or interpret the rules, which in turn is dependent upon what kind of game they want present to the public. My guess is that it will be a game with fewer stoppages and more ball movement.

I'm happy with adding tall mobile players to our list.

BTW, Leigh Mathews has often commentated that the influence of the ruckman is overstated. Jason Dunstall is another non-believer. The chorus is growing. But no matter. Ludwig is just an observer. Rest assured, if the game evolves in such a way that 5 ruckmen on the ground becomes the best solution, Ludwig will be right behind the move.
This is how banter should be done, well done both, an enjoyable read!

What team in the history of the game has gone into a prelim with a bakers dozen of players unworthy of being on the list ?

If we dare lose to the Pies or in the Grand Final, it'll be two dozen players I expect

I was almost enjoying the relative calm and lack of way out there comments in recent weeks too....
