It’s also about go home factor
Maybe Stephen’s was the most likely to stay at the Swans in Sydney vs the others

    Anyway
    Doesn’t matter anymore

how can we pick up either osullivan or murphy One of which would give support to Tom Mc in long term. who do we trade with to get up list (I think Osullivan is a nsw boy. a bushranger in u18s)

There’s no doubt the Stephens decision was a bad one, but overall the the Swans recruiting team have done a good job over many years.
It is worth noting in the same draft we took a guy by the name of Chad Warner. Has turned out OK which begs the question who would you prefer today, Warner or Serong. While you will come back and say would be nice to have both, and it is hard to disagree with that, in all probability due to list requirements we may well have chosen someone else if we already had Serong.
Every club has its draft clangers, and we are no exception.
I know what the club saw in Stephens was his outside run, but under the pressure of AFL football he simply “butchered the ball”.

Totally with you Auntie. KB and Co are to be congratulated for a superb job, filling the gaps in our jigsaw. A KPD needed and we’re cooking on gas (hopefully still available!) We have good depth now in most positions and certainly capable to challenge next year.

Re: Stephens- let’s just forget it, shall we? It was a mistake selecting him instead of Serong but these things happen to every club. We move on.

Sammy needs to be kept- he’s a year by year proposition and let’s hope he can stay fit for at least half a season- he is still good value and better than most. Guys, barring some serious injuries we have an exciting year to look forward to!????

I'm not sure if I'm more excited about Grundy and Adams' arrival or Stephens' departure. Can you believe they gave him 4 years? What were they thinking?

Anyway, to more positive thoughts, after such a tepid trade period last year, what a brilliant contrast this year. Well done to the recruitment team, it just gives so much excitement for 2024. And this achieved notwithstanding significant rebuffs from Barass, Naughton, Himmelberg etc. Great resilience shown.

Now if you could try not to **** up pick 11 that would be just great...

I'm resigned to us missing O'Sullivan, sadly. I can't see us getting any further up the board than Geelong's pick - and even that'd be stretching it with our remaining draft hand - and unless by some miracle Melbourne get up to pick 1, they'll take O'Sullivan at pick 6. I could even see the Hawks taking him at pick 4. I think we have two hopes for a KPD - Murphy gets through to us, or we find a gem later in the draft.

If Cleary falls to his expected range - late 30s/early 40s - we may be able to have a dash at someone else by moving around our picks as the points requirement for him decline.

On another matter, I hope Norf do something stupid and get pick 1 and Harley Reid. He's a generational talent; but their list has more holes than swiss cheese and they have one quality tall in Larkey. They should be keeping all their high end draft picks and bringing in a bundle of players, particularly talls - not fortifying the one element of their list that has some class to it, their mids. They are such a laughable club and I hope their demise comes soon.

Definite upgrade to our list and we now have ~30 players who are solid AFL footballers. Well done to the list management team!

The inclusion of Grundy and Adams will help our defence as the opposition will be less likely to get quick and easy clearances into their forward 50.

As for the draft...Cleary seems to be the obvious second selection. Zane Z sounds very promising too.

The other thing about the recruitment of Adams is we get first hand access to the training techniques that have made the Pies the outstanding final quarter team they've become - worth the price of admission alone I reckon.

With triple premiership coaches and a bevy of 1st round picks over the next couple of drafts, it shouldn't be long before GC and NM are challenging for a premiership. Or they could be like Carlton, who I think had something like 15 first rounders on their list recently (and maybe still do).

It's easy in hindsight to be critical of the Stephens selection in 2019. Everyone was upbeat about the selection at the time. Most draft gurus had us taking Flanders in the draft, who would have been better than Stephens, but it's not like it was a toss up between Serong and Stephens and we clearly screwed up.

i wonder where ZZ will fall in the draft. I don't see much value in pick 12 this year. Unless we trade it out along with a our 2024 1st rounder, there's little chance we can get a high enough pick to draft O'Sullivan. We will have to wait until the trade period finishes to see who owns what picks. Depending on the projected range for ZZ, I would look to trade down pick 12 for a pick around 20 this year and a future 2nd rounder.

Hamling, McCartin, Melican, Arnold, Francis, Edwards, McDonald, Amartey, McLean, Buller, Reid. That's 11 KPPs. Lots of doubt about quality and injury risk, but the bodies are there to fill 5 spots. I don't think anyone can predict how it will pan out. We only need about half to come through next year and then reassess the situation. We need to extend McDonald asap. I would think that we would be lining up possible replacements next post season; there will certainly be a few to cut from that group next year.

We've given ourselves as good a chance as possible to challenge for a top 4 spot next year. There's plenty of injury risk in our list. How that goes may well determine how the season pans out for us.

The Suns have a plan and in the past three years, substantially improved their player development - and will now benefit enormously from their Academy.

Norf don't and will remain crap. Norf already have 11 first round draft picks on their list - either direct, or traded in - and that's AFTER the retirements and delistings this year. They are clearly crap at player development. Rather than a bevy of draft picks, the AFL should have given them a temporary investment in their development program to sort that out first; rather than waste the time and career and aspirations of another generation of bright-eyed kids who'll be spat out by a club mired in mediocrity.

What are the chances that Clarko can fix that? Frankly, I don't know. But a lot of AFL commentators think he's the best coach and should be able to.

Potentially, but I've also posted on here before - that's part of the reason I think the AFL should have held off dumping a fresh batch of kids in there. Clarko was out most of last season, so give him a full year crack at improving them before loading up their draft hand to a ridiculous degree.
