What if North go alright next year and the AFL don’t give them the end of first round compo picks? Remember that they are not confirmed.

the compo picks are no longer relevant as they have already traded them (1 to us) so it no longer matters if they overachieve next year

North have the best young Vic midfield and a bundle of picks.
A full fwd and some good pieces.
They need some talls but most teams do. Its crazy they got any handouts.

They will be very good in 3-5yrs

Hamling can be a good pickup, only cautious part about him for me is that he has looked like a good pick up for 8yrs. He did have a bad ankle injury for most of his time at Freo
Thanks for that. Hope he has a good run with us.

To now be ranked the 34th best player in a draft in only two years, questions need to be asked what the selectors saw in him, and how that didn't translate into a decent long term player for the club.
....and why they didn't see Swans fan Serong as a better choice. I'm sure KB and crew just want to quietly move on from that complete stuff up now....and I hope they learn from it.

I agree. North Melbourne lost 20 games in a row, but several of those losses were competitive (about five goals or less), especially later in the season. If they can improve by two goals a game next year, they could win about seven games or so, and will improve from there.

It's probably best to move on from this. It's possible to find a few draft clangers for every club where a far better player was passed up for someone who was nowhere near as good. Every draft has a few.

To show how much we're overthinking this, Adelaide did even worse in the 2019 draft: they drafted Fischer McAsey at pick 6 who only played 10 games before being delisted. Serong was not drafted until pick 8.

I know the numbers have been crunched as the trades have dropped, but can someone tell me where I am wrong here:

We had 46 players on our 2023 list.
We delisted 6, 3 retired and we traded Stephens. That leaves us 36 from the 2023 list including those not yet re-signed.
We have added 4 new players from other clubs. That pushes the 2024 list back up to 40.
Surely that should leave 6 vacant spots, and with just 3 draft picks available we are still going to be 3 players down on 2023.

I know there are intricacies involving rookie lists etc, but the comments people have been throwing around on this board about things being tight don't seem to ring true, especially around having to cut Reid and/or Wicks or drafting just two players.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

He was highly rated. Hard to judge if a guy is going to handle things mentally. Looked a million dollars in his draft highlights. i thought he had turned the corner last year but he went into his shell again this year.

I wish him all the best and hope he does well at North.

Could you guys help me out. I couldn't find your 2019 posts criticizing our selection of Stephens over Serong. Those posts deserve acclaim and should be highlighted here.

Criticising the pick in draft day is irrelevant. Some close enough, were surprised with the selection but most dont know any of the kids in detail.

Criticising in hindsight is only relevant cos the other f8ck8ng guy was a mad Swans supporter from interstate and rated similar who is now also an All Australian.

You have not included Arnold and Buller who were added via the mid season draft to replace injured players placed on the long term injury list. I think the players involved were Paddy McCartin and Sam Reid

I know I certainly did! But I also know I don't know how to use the search function on here, so you're just gonna have to take my word for it Ludwig!

Time to get over Serong. There would be another 15 clubs who overlooked him and 17 clubs who overlooked Chad Warner at least on one occasion. It happens every year. lets talk about Goodes, or Parker, or Micky O, or McInerney, or Sam Reid, or Tommy McCartin, or AJ, etc who were all overlooked by every club in the draft but the Swans.

The fact that Serong barracked for the Swans is irrelevant. I have barracked for them all my life but that hasn't made me any closer to playing for them.

I know there were some who preferred another selection. I don't doubt that you may well have been one of them. I believe you. I've probably been the most critical of Stephens. I've excoriated his play in VFL. And I'm very disappointed how things have turned out. Drafting isn't an exact science, and it was not at all obvious that Stephens was going to be a poor choice or that Serong would become the star he is. In hindsight KB made the wrong selection, but there is a limit to level of criticism he deserves for making that selection. We all know that you win some and you lose some, and you have to look at the draft record of the list managers over a long period of time.

And finally, yes, it is time to move on, and I'm sorry I made that previous comment. I should have moved on.
