I find it hard to believe that we would have broken the salary cap given our concessions, but if so its another example of mismanagement.
Not sure about contract statuses but agree that none of those 3 had any currency at the trade table and should simply have been cut if out of contract. Spida was also on a healthy contract for the 2008 season which wasn't warranted considering his onfield output.
All in all it was a massive stuff up on the part of the club, there is no defending it
Those who know our players - other than merely on the field - admire most but not all of the list. You normally only hear late at the end of the Club Champion dinner and then mainly about players that have left. Ask them if they stay in touch with Baz and Jolly, for example?
Having said that, I think the trade to the Saints was the making for Schneids, who may have continued in a Baz-like downward spiral in Sydney. He's certainly learned at the feet of the opportunistic master - Milne.
Dempster I think was just part of a bookend deal. But he's certainly made the most of his chances and good on him.Last edited by Go Swannies; 28 September 2010, 12:39 PM.Comment

No defending it? I think you could do research and find there was. This wasn't a Scott Stephens, Monty - even Jude - let's trade them and see if they can experience rebirth after a period of stagnation. If you talk to those at the club when their guard is down you may find that Schneids was seen as a good fit as a Saint's party animal and not so much for the straitlaced Swans - especially if there were going to be a lot of his juniors coming through and potentially being led the wrong way.

Interesting stuff and thanks for the insight from someone obviously close to the players. Its also good to know that the Swans are much the same as any other club, there will be players who are respected by their peers and those who will not be.Interesting comments on Schneiders , Jolly and Hall but I would like to know what happened to Buchanan? He was an out and out champion on both GF's and then he seemed to just fade and got traded. What's the inside story on this move??Comment

Stuart Maxfield was today interviewed by afl.com.au in regards to the draft and trade week.
- Looks likely the club is going to be very active again at the trade table.

Trade winds: Cats wait, Tigers get busy - AFL.com.au
Hawthorn is also dealing with the prospect of losing a disillusioned player, with the club questioning the professionalism of livewire forward Carl Peterson.
he is an amazing player when he is "on" but perhaps a little too similar to Jetta and Rohan.Comment

Will the Swans be active in the exchange period?
Would we trade our top draft pick?
Would players like Vesz and Meredith be put out as possible trades?
Answers include:
Swans were very happy with their trade period last year getting Mumford, Kennedy and McGlynn, and then later Bradshaw via the draft
Swans would look to see who is available in the trade period and whether those players met any of our requirements...didnt really say what our requirements were
As for Vesz and Meredith...the interviewer floated them because they had failed to crack into the line-up after several years
Maxfield said club was happy with both of them...was probably more committal to Meredith who had struggled with injuries but was seen as a long term Swan. Vesz was described as someone who was working hard, had had a good year with the Reserves
Also stated that even though we dont have a high draft pick, that there is some quality in the draft.Red and white till I dieComment

RE: Peterson, I was hanging out for us to draft him back in 2006 as he is extremely talented. Word is that he wants to go back to WA, if he is struggling with life as an AFL player that will be the 2nd club he has burnt and we should probably steer clear.
I haven't watched the Maxfield interview yet, but I really hope we aren't very active this trade period. We were succesful trading last year but that was a pretty unique set of circumstances. I think topping up with more mid tier players this year won't help us bridge the gap on the top 2 next year and won't help us win a premiership in the long run.Comment

I felt certain at the time that Dempster was thrown in for free because Roos no longer rated him in the 22 and told Rossy you can have him for free if you want him.
