Two differences apply to Franklin.

1) He was a restricted free agent, so the deal offered to him had to be a real deal, otherwise Hawthorn could rightly say the contract we were asked to match wasn't the real one, and we might have kept him otherwise for the lower value/lesser years.

2) AFL is vindictive - it was enraged that Franklin signed with us instead of GWS and threw a tantrum, issued an unjustifiable trade ban and removed COLA - there is no way it will allow us to modify Franklin's contract, even if he (heaven forbid) becomes paralysed and can't serve out the last few years of his contract.

Except that they're not going to get an early first round pick for Hill. Second round at best, but given how high Freo's second round pick is, they may not want to give that up for Hill. Indeed, from a recruitment priority point of view, it isn't clear that Freo should be going hard for Hill, despite him deciding he wants to play with his brother.

I still reckon we are a KPD short for next year, especially against teams like GWS and I wonder if we could go in for Eric McKenzie from the Weagles.

I imagine he wouldn't be cheap but he would probably come a bit under what Tom wants (mids tend to charge a premium) though at 28 he may well be looking four year deal. If we were to get pick 15 from Hawthorn and send that to West Coast in exchange for McKenzie and their second rounder (Pick 30) then I think that could work. They could then send that to GWS plus their 2017 first rounder for Rory Lobb and keep a first rounder.....

McKenzie had an awful year. I think he's too slow anyway. I also think witk Reid, AJ and Talia we are quite talented in the KPP area. I do think we will take a quality KPP in each of the next few drafts which should give us the depth we need. And let's not forget about Abe Davis who will be a very good player.

Freo don't have a second this year, they gave it to Gold Coast for Harley Bennell.

Given Freo also want McCarthy from GWS who would also be rated an early second you'd think, not sure how Freo get these trades done although GWS would probably take Freo's 2018 second.

Same for Hawks who want two very highly valued players in O'Meara and Tom Mitchell but have almost no currency, just pick 14 which will become pick 15 when Brisbane get their Priority Pick. FWIW, think Tom will stay, we'll trade out a couple of fringies to find the extra $.

Can't terminate a contract, can however trade him elsewhere if he agrees on the same or better terms than what remains of his contract, which is now just for 2017.

He's had a big numbers year in the NEAFL, he is in the squad of a GF'ist so may attract attention from list rebuilders.

The Bulldogs may be evolving the AFL lists as they gain more success. If you look at their team, they really dont have a big spine, but instead have a dozen or so midfielders. If they show that they can win a GF like this (hopefully not) then other teams may see that as a template and try to replicate the same. This would mean that there may not be a lot of gorilla-types in the other teams so we may not need them, either. It could be that key position players may come to look more like Bontempelli or Rampe instead of Hawkins or Lake.

E.g., the Eagle's web defence last year was seen as amazing and revolutionary, but teams have adapted to it and it is no longer as effective. Bulldogs apply a rolling zone defence which is aided by their squad of fit agile midfielders who can run and fill the spots. I think we need to see how teams adapt to nullify the Bulldogs next year first to see if their style of play is actually going to result in longer term recruitment trends.

Grimes was delisted by Melbourne, I was surprised that he's 27 but even then would have expected they'd wait until the trading period.
