How do we get Robbie Tarrant to the swans to replace Grundy in 2018 ?

    Robbie Tarrant - NMFC.com.au

The guy is a very good tall defender

    Once again nullified Bud

I also think this guy could have his best years at the swans and we need outside run to compete against the best 8 teams

I agree, he's a great defender. Probably 2nd best KPD after Rance. But he's contracted until 2019, so we will have to look for other solutions. I think we are doing fine in the KPD department with some nice youngsters coming through in Melican, Aliir and Maibaum. Talia has the size and generally good skills, but can make silly mistakes, but then, so do they all.

Personally, I reckon we don't need to seek out a KPD. Melican looks like a no-nonsense, tight-marking, non-possession chasing, hard-at-it, team-first, ten-year, old school backman. Him and Aliir provide a great mix going forward. Plus Sam Reid, when we need him, if he signs, with Marsh and Rampe who can provide cover. We need to spend our dollars elsewhere.

Ludwig is not alone in his alternative ruckman theories. This from SEN today

"A mobile, agile, marking and threatening ruck man is far more impactful and useful than solely a tap winning one. This isn?t to say Sam Jacobs, who would probably occupy the All-Australian ruck spot right now, isn?t versatile. However, Cam Pedersen was simply more adept around the ground and despite getting belted in hit outs 74-22, there is no doubt he won the battle of the two big men."

What we learned from Round 8...

Will Hayward was an inspired draft pick.

He's a beauty. But I think it's hard to call it inspired when we waited until pick 21 or whatever it was. We were lucky he was still there. Emma Quayle had him just about top 10 from memory.

In Melican, Aliir and Maibaum our KPD stocks are quite high but I'm still not absolutely convinced Aliir's long term future is as a KPD though I think his future generally is very bright.

I can't help but think Talia will be in his way at the end of the season, given he have used 35 players to date and he has not been one of them. We all hope AJ will come back and if he does then those four should be sufficient for a while.

If he doesn't then I wouldn't be surprised to see us go for an experienced KPD in his late 20s at the end of next year who can give us 2-3 very good seasons or even another draftee in the third round this year to top up the young talent.

It was considered by many one the steal of the draft getting him that late. There really is something about that kid, class is probably the best word. At present he is one 10 goals after 8 games. If he can kick 20+ along with Papley and Reid we are suddenly looking a lot less one dimensional in front of goal.

May, surely this is far enough into the season to start thinking about delistings/retirements/upgrades?

BJ & Foote delisted, McVeigh retired, Melican upgraded. Main list players on shaky ground, Rose, Leonardis, Talia.

Foote has only just been upgraded so I am sure is under contract for next year as is Rose. It would be harsh to delist him so soon, I still think he may have a future as a run with player.

I'd be thinking the following are off the list - BJ, Leonardis, McVeigh, Talia and possibly (but hopefully not) AJ.

I think it is highly likely that the rookie list will be done away with an there will be an extended list of 42 minimum with fourth round draftees having a one year deal at the club's discretion.

That being the case we'd have minimum 8, up to 10 to put on the list if we have four delistings, let's assume we add 9. From the rookie list you'd think Melican, COR, Fox and one of the remaining guys (Murray, Pink, Edwards, Fisher) would get upgraded. We'd go then for five draftees, the three traditional picks plus two picks which would have been rookies before. I'd hope that we at try and get at least two academy players on the list if they are good enough.

This ignores the possibility of us losing either or both Jones and Reid

That's right on Foote and Rose. Both contracted through next season. AJ has also signed on for another season. BJ, Leo and Macca the most likely to go at this point. I don't think Talia will be delisted unless he just fades away this season, but he does have to stand out more in the NEAFL games if he wants to see some senior footy this year. I would give him some time as he's missed a whole season with that foot injury and suspension.

Maybe we should pull a Xavier Richards and start playing Talia forward. Seems like he's not going to get a look in as a KPD sitting behind Reg, Melican, Aliir maybe even Maibaum at the moment

Except for Foote, I reckon that is on the money.

Given he wasn't one of the 34 or so players used Talia is a certain cull imo. Bj, Rose and Leonardis on borrowed time. Should be an easy year to pick who goes at season end this year given we've already trawled our depth.

Only main list players not to play this year are Cameron, Maibaum, Talia, Leonardis and AJ. Talia did get as close as emergency and Cameron would probably have had a gig if not injured at the wrong time. Rookies Melican and Fox have also been used and Edwards got as close as emergency. We have nearly used every available resource except notably Leonardis. Can't see him being retained or BJ for that matter and Talia has to on the cusp. With eight rookies all without exception showing some promise we need some space on the list. Big question is what happens if the rookie list is done away with as is speculated. Will Sydney retain the option of up to three NSW rookies.

All things being equal I hope that we look at drafting (main list or rookie list if it still exists) at least 2-3 academy kids given their performances to date in the U18 championships. I guess it will be how they man up on the Div 1 opposition that really counts

Skrivanic, Bell, Hardman and Carroll would seem the front runners from the reports of our man on the ground Barracuda
