Do you know when he moved to head honcho, liz?

Beatson was my brother-in-law's PE teacher, many a moon ago. Random.

I think that that is right. See Emma Quayle's terrific book about that draft, featuring accounts of Vezpremi, Rioli, Cotchin, Ebert, Masten, Kreuzer and McEvoy as they went through the process. I think in there it makes it pretty clear that Rioli was always headed to the Hawks, having himself made it clear that he would not play for a non-Melbourne Club, and the other Clubs. My favourite bit in the book was Masten's family freaking out at his being selected by the West Coke Eagles.

This has to be one draft class that Beatson doesn't want any record of wikipedia!! Veszpremi (ahead of Cyril, Harry Taylor, Rance, Callan Ward, Scott Thompson and Cale Hooker), Meredith and Bird, with O'Dwyer, Brendan Murphy, Jake Orreal, Matthew Beckmans (?), Aaron Bruce and Dean Terlich in the Rookie Draft. Horrendous. The only positive is we got in Mattner via a trade. Would this be our worst drafting effort in recent history?
You can discount Cyril. He said he wouldn't play for a non-Victorian club. He's a spoiled little brat who only got the Scotch College scholarship because of his skin colour and has no appreciation for the opportunities he was given.

If it wasn't the following year (ie 2008) it was the one after. Not sure that Maxfield, wonderful contributor as he has been to the club (and is still involved, I think), was really qualified to head up the recruitment. Those roles are generally taken by people who've spent years scouting young players. It's hard to think of many (any?) ex-players who've been involved in that side of things for a prolonged period.

That's a pretty uncharitable (nay, spiteful) comment to make about someone who you've probably never met and have little idea about. I hope you have a good basis on which to make comments like that.

I know many people at Scotch College, so although I don't know him personally, I have a very good understanding about him.

That is a seriously ugly accusation.

Excellent news. I'm excited to be retaining McV as a coach after next season. Don't know how we are going to fit Stevie J onto our panel now.

True but pretty good sources. Regardless, refusing to play for an interstate side is really bad form that speaks volumes about his integrity, and moreso the integrity of the AFL who allowed it to happen.

I'm a bit undecided. He deserves it based on his form but I'm concerned about this hindering the development of our youngsters, Newman, O'Riordon, etc. Hawthorn don't make that mistake.

Happy enough about this though it will be increasingly hard for the likes of Florent and Dawson again next year. That's OK, you've got to earn your games and they are both on the books until the end of 2019. End of next season will be one of quite a bit of change I'd say.

It will be interesting to see what we do now. Do we just take our round 1 and 2 picks and upgrade Melican? We usually take three draftees so maybe we'll look at moving a player on who feels they need to go somewhere else for more opportunities. Or would we possibly look at trading our third rounder for a future pick, it'll be worth 200+ bidding points so we won't be just letting that pick slide.

I suspect we will make a call on a fringe player, with their agreement, and trade them and get an upgrade of our third rounder. Rose is a player I think a number of clubs would look at given the development work we have done as realistically I think he will really struggle to get many games with us. Lions?

Newman has still managed to play 18 games to date so he's getting a game. COR and the others have to earn their spots, not that COR has done anything this year to suggest he deserves a spot.

Great competition across the lines for selection is good for the club I think. The back half of the year we have hardly had any injuries at all so there is no guarantee that will happen again next year.

Nobody in the bottom half of the senior list will be coming back secure that they'll be in the team Week 1 and I like that.

All the same it will be possible that we'll be able to name an unchanged lineup Week 1 next year from our last game this year if nobody gets traded, not sure I remember us having a situation where nobody in our best 22 retires or gets traded.
