My opinion re Tom Mcartin is that he may become a serious top5 key defender

    Fast
    Tall
    Agile
    Great leap
    Great mark

Unfortunately he has not shown an ability to kick at goal Very well at all

    Literally goes jelly legged

But he could be an Alex Rance defender in the near future which could be just as valuable if not more so then a good lead forward who can’t kick goals at a high %

It’s early to judge but he really does struggle kicking straight let alone smoothly at goal
Agree that his kicking for goal generally is pretty ordinary and its a skill that either you have or you dont. From what I recall, he wasnt exactly a gun shot as a youngster thats suddenly lost his accuracy with the higher intensity, his biggest knock was goal kicking accuracy as a junior.

His entire game this year was built around making a contest and bringing the ball to ground for his small forwards. Useful when you are the undersized newbie but not want you want from your key forward. Im sure he will clunk marks as his body develops more , but that doesnt mean anything if he kicks 1.4 every week.

And from what I've seen of McCartin, he possesses one attribute that can separate the elite from the very good. Which is that top players see and process the game, just that little bit faster than those around them. McCartin's decision making and positioning, suggests that he has that.
I'm sure that's what Saints fans were thinking when they drafted Paddy McCartin, Giants fans with Johnathan Patton Dees fans when they drafted Jack Watts

I'm not saying that McCartin won't improve like your suggesting, but as the above examples show, there's no guarantees. FWIW I think he's going to be a player but I don't expect him to contribute much at senior level next season, and he's certainly not as advanced as what Moore was at the same age

At age seventeen it was.....he was great, has an excellent footy brain, no, make that elite footy brain and his kicking.....well, Plugger will sort him out. Future gun for sure......

Yes, I agree that there are no guarantees, but the general trend is that they do. And McCartin, being born on the 30th of December, has probably more scope for improvement, than many others in his draft.
While on Patton and the other McCartin, I suspect that one of the reasons that both were rated so highly when drafted, was that they were already monsters. That they haven't improved as much as expected, could be because they had less scope for physical growth. Perhaps a bit like Moore?
As for Watts, my guess for why he was taken number one, was that he did a really good interview?

We'll have to agree to disagree on this, although I'll make sure I bump this thread when Moore kicks a bag for us in round 1

I heard a rumour that Jetts is sick of his father's nagging and wants to come back.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

Apparently Vandenberg’s widowed mother has just moved to Sydney and he’s weighing up a move to Swans for that reason.

I think he's more of a meat and potatoes kind of midfielder than a silky star but the prospect of him in exchange (in whole or part) for Hanners is more appealing than a future second round pick. At least he'd help fill the bit of an age void we have on the list in that mid-20s, 100 game bracket.

Plus the Saints have a silly abundance of Jacks on their list - six currently, not to mention a Jake, a Jade, two Joshs, a Jarryn and a Jimmy.

Not sure Hall was really an omission as he was an established "star", albeit a troubled one. The rest of the players you listed were classic fringe players. Maybe Mattner is another exception in that he was a regular in the Crows' senior team before he moved, but I got the feeling he had been advised to look elsewhere for more future opportunities. The rest were not really wanted by the existing club, or wanted but still stuck behind a fair few in the queue for a regular senior game (eg Mumford).

Went to a Swans dinner here in Adelaide last year where Marty Mattner was the speaker. Seem to remember him saying that Swans approached the Crows, he was a bit non-plused by it, but our offer of pick 28? made the Crows keen to trade him so he moved.

Trade week still a week away and it's already getting silly!

Dean Towers, Jordan Foote, Angus Styles and Jake Brown have all been delisted.

Wishing all the best to them all and thanks for their contribution to the Swans!
