The deal seemed preposterous, but the Swans are getting value for money from Buddy Franklin - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

    This article says:
"A contract that guaranteed Franklin $700,000 in his first two seasons, $1.2 million in his next three and then $1.3 million, $1.4 million, $1.5 million and $1 million could never be described as a bargain.

A ‘significant’ part of Buddy’s contract is in the form of an Additional Service Agreement so is not coming out of the salary cap. Every club can pay up to a total of approx. $1.1 mill in the form of ASAs.

(I think it was Ireland who used the description of ‘significant’ in regard to the ASA payment when Buddy was recruited.)

This was a cleverly structured contract with the increasing larger amounts basically using up a fair proportion of the yearly salary cap increases plus as Meg notes paying a lot of it via ASA's.

I thought i read buddy was exempt from ASA payments, another Fitzpatrick gift ?

I think next TV deal will be decent, Foxtels only saving grace is AFL, if they lose that there is next to no reason to have foxtel due to internet TV

Not sure I agree with that assessment. I reckon he's a bargain.

To put his contract into perspective, its been widely commented (ie I've read it a lot but can't cite a source) that Wayne Carey was on a salary of $1m+ at some point during his North Melbourne days, when the salary cap was such that this represented around 25% of the cap.

Nah, Meg and 707 are correct. Here's an article from the time he was recruited with Ireland stating much of his contract would come out of the marketing allowance. (See four paragraphs from the end.)

its a bargain that has already paid for itself

Possibly. That would mean that Tippett was on close to a mill p.a. He was never worth that much and his signing (for that amount), was a terrible decision. Even if Franklin didn't come to us it still would have been an appalling decision.

So we're putting Menzel through a medical. My money would be on him going home to Port who have made a habit of trying out home coming discards.

I reckon Menzel would be a good pick up, complements nicely who we already have in the forward line. Townsend and Sutcliffe less enthused about. I wouldn't want those kind of players stopping the senior development of COR & Dawson who must be backed in and played.

The melts from the Cats supporters on the other board if we effectively swap him for Rohan will be quite amusing

No talk of AJ going to another club yet in the media?
                        Is he still a chance?

I wouldn't have thought so, just too much of a risk medically

I think his best case scenario is being picked up by an AFL-affiliated VFL side. If he can get a few games under his belt late in the year, he might be seen as worth another shot, but I don't see him being on an AFL list next year.
Could potentially wind up at North with his old mentor Rhyce Shaw

I'd love for us to take Menzel, but I fear we'd try to coach the flair out of him to try to address some of his perceived shortcomings.

Taking Menzel is essentially a Rohan/Menzel swap. And I dont think we get a lot out of that. Ronke and Papley pushed Rohan out of the side. They will do the same to Menzel.
