So if we can position ourselves to get a quality midfielder (s) in their mid 20's, then I say anything is on the table.

I do agree though a better ruckman is part of the midfield requirement. I just wanted to make the point that it's not the silver bullet.
I think taylor was supposed to be that mid. However he is soooo unfit! I just watched the port/swans scratchy and he is incredibly unfit. He has one decent run and then spends the next 5 minutes head down on his haunches trying to recover

He has the physique of Stewie Dew! Presumably there will be some blunt conversations about getting himself in shape or not getting a game. Didn't they persuade Lewis Jetta to train with Kieren Jack to get himself in shape? I wonder if they need to pair LTaylor up with someone to get him in better shape.

Doubt we're doing anything for a quick fix, this is a serious rebuild being done the correct way.

A lot of young talent on the list and three more very serious additions at the ND. Patience required.

There are players on our current list who could be the missing midfield link(s), that I named above: Hewett, Heeney, Mills.

I know there are reasons why the last two haven't been playing much in midfield, but given our midfield is THE area of weakness, it would make sense to play them there and try and patch up elsewhere.

We are pretty light on for marking players up forward. We have been for years (didn't Xavier Richards play in the GF ffs?), but we seem to have a potential glut of Mills sized backs... Mills certainly seems to have turned into a player that relishes the physical side of the game.

I wonder if we should be playing one or more of Amartey, McLean even Knoll to see if they cut it as a McCartin replacement, rather than persisting with the dogged but limited Sinkers?

I don’t think we’ll be looking for a ‘quick fix’ bit if there is a player or players in the right age demographic that could fill some gaps on our list and help speed up our return to finals, then hopefully we’ll be looking into them. I’m not talking superstars on monster contract offers, I mean more the sort of recruiting we used to be quite astute with.

If we’re going to keep Mccartin down back, perhaps out of contract Jeremy Finlayson could be looked at as a tall forward? Right age bracket, out of contract. Other much bigger priority signings at the giants this year.

If list sizes are cut this year, which sadly I think they will be, and/or salary caps tightened (inevitable), then this would be the perfect year to pick up some "fringe" players very cheaply.

I think our trades in the last few years have been speculative to put it mildly. We would need to get it right this time around.

I'm surprised our conditioning staff have let this get so far out of control. Something is not right.

Generally speaking (not specifically about Taylor), I think there's way too much criticism of some of our players, especially when they have one bad outing. A lot of it could be psychological, given that everyone knows that we're not playing finals and being away from home so long, it can seem like no one is watching.

There's even growing criticism of George Hewett, even though he's out with injury. It's as if anyone who hasn't starred in the last game should be up for delisting.

There will be a lot of pressure on our coaching staff to get this group going in the right direction once pre-season training kicks in. We don't have the talent of a Gold Coast and we have a few holes in our list related to ruck and forward positrons, but otherwise we should have a strong enough list to considerably improve in the coming years. It's not just one player in or out that's going to make the difference.

I wrote off this season before it started. Since the Covid break, I've been saying it's just a development season. Results really don't mean anything. It's been disappointing because of the plethora of injuries, but at least we are getting games into players that otherwise would not.

If we are still in the same place next year, then I think we will have plenty to complain about. But for now, I don't think it's panic time just yet.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/493041/d...-top-prospects - "a significant shift to the NGA rules - clubs expect that at least the first round, and possibly the second, would be made 'protected' from NGA bids." Not this year but still not decided when to start. A reasonable change but hopefully, it is not a precursor to changes to our Academy rules.

I think the VIC clubs will be going beserk about this. They don't get priority access to the best talent, only the lower rounds. I can't see how Eddie won't be calling for a similar approach to the northern academies.

What? An AFL working party was formed without the great Maguire to ensure the "correct" result!

I think we know what this means, the AFL in response to the hysteric campaign against the northern academies created the NGA's with such loose rules that any kid showing promise could be shoe horned into an NGA. What about the son of a former AFL player who happened to be born in Egypt because that's where his parents were at the time, he's now an NGA!

AFL created a monster that will see the best player in the draft go to a recent Premier rather than the Wooden Spooner

Expect violent kick back on this from Fatchins

One thing I do worry about is the crap delivery into our forward line. Firstly because it would be incredibly frustrating for our forwards, especially for a heart on the sleeve type player like Paps (could be enough for him to look elsewhere......). Secondly, it really impedes the development of a young key forward like McCartain. Our forward line cops a pasting at times but with the quality of delivery, what can anyone really expect?

Agreed, Ralph. It would be very difficult to thrive as a forward in the Swans' forward line at present. Generally, we struggle to get it inside there and when we do its a kick under pressure or comes in treakle slow with defenders everywhere. Look at Gary Rohan. Looking OK for the Cats now in a better forward line with much better delivery from the Cats midfield line.

I'm hopeful that Papps will stay with us but my gut feel is that he will again ask to be traded to the Blues. We will then have to decide whether to keep him regardless of his unhappiness, or trade him. If we got a really good offer for him then we may decide to trade him and give ourselves potentially two top 10 draft picks which could help us develop a really nice future looking ahead.

are you sugesting not many since Xavier? I have Darcy Cameron, Mcartin, Blakey (well kinda), McLean. We did have Tippet, Reid, sinclair and buddy signed up for years limiting spots. Aliir developing. We all know the big fellas take time and you dont want to go too tall. Through that period we needed pace to come in.

Or were you forgetting what Xavier did to himself?

If it's that bad, he should get into shape. Staying on the Swans' list should be conditional on running a 3 km time trial in under 10 minutes (or whatever an acceptable time is) by the deadline for post-season list lodgement. If he doesn't make the deadline, delist him. He may have some skinfold issues too, but these are better handled during the whole of the off season.

We're going to have some hard decisions to make regarding the playing list, and we cannot afford to be carrying passengers on the playing list.

That doesn't mean Sinclair is of no value. He could still play as a second ruck, while posing interesting problems for the opposition as a resting ruckman in the forward line.
