My take is there is no good reason other than the draft picks the teams currently hold and the quality of players in the top 4 of the draft compared to the next 10. The Crows pick 4 (although it will likely be 6 due to father son bidding) is likely to pick up a high quality player, where as Carlton's pick is a little bit more of a lottery. That said, you pick up good players anywhere in the draft, like pick 56 for example.
I reckon if the Crows had pick 10 they would hand it over.
Thanks for that. Sounds like it's based on perception rather than player equity.

If he'd told us earlier he wanted to leave, or at the very least flagged it as a possibility, then we could worked to find a club prepared to pay a fair price. Which is how the Cerra deal feels. He could have gone to Melbourne, but chose Blues I think partly because he knew it would get done (and was fair to his former club).

Still there's plenty yet to play out. Who knows what discussions we've had with Jordan and his agent about the PSD, with North or GCS, with Port, with the Crows. If North turn around and say we'll take JD if he puts himself into the PSD, then Adelaide and JD are screwed. Which I would rather enjoy.
That may also explain why the club has reacted so strongly at the trade table than they normally do. It does look they were so blindsided by JD's trade request. Hope we do manage to pull a rabbit out of the hat which the Crows weren't expecting.

        +1

KB has been known to do so! Let's hope the old dog still has a bag full of tricks.

It seems that anyone over 26 at Hawthorn is open to trade according to the AFL site, James Sicily is 26. He has some mongrel about him and could be an addition to the backline. If Hawthorn are looking for picks we may be able to get him cheaply.

          Just a thought.

That is a brilliant thought. I have been thinking that Swans are up to something. I've also been wracking my brain for who at the Hawks might be of interest to us, given everyone over 26 is available

If we could get Sicily, that would be great. Although I doubt they'd part with him.

Part of me wonders if the demands we are making of the Crows are based on what we need for a player we have in our sights (as in the Hawks might want a top ten pick for Sicily)

I don't think it's based so much on perception as on the market. Unfortunately it is a buyer's market - particularly when the buyer has pick 4 in the PSD and JD is out of contract. It's not so much related to the notional worth of the player (compared to, say, the kind of player you might expect to pick up with the corresponding picks). The only way we can make the playing field fairer again is either to persuade JD to change his mind about leaving if the Crows won't play fair, or learn that North or Suns might actually take JD in the PSD ahead of the Crows. North and the Suns may well prefer not to give their position away at this stage. Especially North. Currently they have the background of the PSD as leverage in their negotiations with Richmond for CCJ. If they said they would take JD then they would be shooting themselves in the foot.

I'd be interested in Sicily but I don't think the Hawks will trade him. It's probably not a coincidence they're talking about being open to trading players "over 26".

Obviously not a huge amount of movement, since many of the top prospects haven't been playing, but they have promoted Corey, brother of Chad, to 30. And they have mentioned Leek Alleer for the first time, but only to say that he's the leading over age prospect, who should be picked up in the second round.

afl.com.au are reporting its "26 and over". In fact they are alleging "James Sicily, Chad Wingard and Jarman Impey are among a host of Hawthorn players aged 26 or above who are available for a trade."

I'm extremely excited about the possibility of Sicily --> Swans

SEN saying Sam Mitchell is personally calling clubs trying to offload "the likes of Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara and Chad Wingard" dunno if that would include Sicily?

The little rat did blindside us.

My understanding is around the time he made his "don't be nervous Swans fans" comment, his manager was telling SA clubs he was staying in Sydney, and it was only an issue of whether he took the deal that took him to FA, or the longer-term deal on offer. To the point where Adelaide at least had turned their attention elsewhere, and were stunned when he came back into play very late in the piece. In fact, he didn't even have the guts to do it face to face in his exit meeting, but after he'd gotten to SA in quarantine.

Not sure where you're getting your information but I'm glad to hear that it sounds like Dawson meant what he said when he said we didn't need to worry and that he only changed his mind later.

Freemantal want a ruck forward replacement for Lobb. Give them Amarty. Much cheaper than Lobb and they can develop him.

Lobb always played well against us.
Please don't double down on Lobb (especially over Amartey).....it's embarrassing.

Sicily did a knee, at best plays 5 games next year.

Forgot about that, although he did it in 2019 and Sam Mitchell said he expects him to be ready for round one 2022 (It's from the Age, a week ago)

It could be deemed embarrassing to think that Amartey has shown anything to suggest he’s anywhere near the level of Rory Lobb. He’s taken us apart a few times. A 206cm marking machine.

Don’t mention injuries. The Amartey party also deals with injuries.

We’d need to give draft pick as well as Amartey to get him.

I think a committee of Faunac8, The Bloods, MCS, Ludwig and I’mUnimformed can debate the question of whether my Lobb for Amartey suggestion is embarrassing?
