Some interesting comments from Gardiner on Dawson, Ladhams and Reid: AFL.com.au on Twitter: ""Was the club mindful of making sure that it sends a message, did it consider putting a stake in the ground? Yeah, we did consider it and it's something that we're mindful of.”
Swans footy manager Charlie Gardiner discusses the Jordan Dawson deal.

This selection of a possible 2022 team seems pretty good
Cunningham, T.McCartin, Rampe
Lloyd, Fox, Blakey
Jmac, Mills, Campbell?
Paps, Bud, Gulden
Wicks, McDonald, Hayward
Parker, Hickey, Heeney
Only 2 non-draft players
AND of the remainder of the squad not many likely to be on the bench.
Ladhams and Kennedy much of the time
Clarke and Taylor if required
Sinclair in an emergency but the swap with Jetta almost turns him into an "honorary draftee"
Pretty impressive in my view, and puts the Trade period hysteria into perspectiveComment

I assume that Norf did not tell anyone (including us) as to their intentions regarding Dawson should he have walked to the PSD. It would be an interesting thing to know whether we tried to speak to them about him? I would imagine its a form of draft tampering to do that, so they would not admit it publicly, even if they did. Imagine the conversation: "Adelaide ares screwing us over on Dawson. We are seriously considering walking him to the PSD as long as you guys are going to make a play for him. What's your situation regarding this possibility?"Comment

Having a look at Twomey's latest player draft ratings, and I know the pre draft write ups always paint the rosiest picture of draftees, but after taking out Daicos and Darcy, the players he rates 13 to 21 are an interesting group, we now have pick 16.
Amazingly, Wanganeen-Milera lobs at pick 12, the very pick we gave Port! They surely must take him given the club connections
So here's some names to watch from rating 13 - Sinn a HB/mid Vic, 14 - Sonsie a mid Vic, 15 - Roberts a fwd/mid SA, 16 - Goater 190cm mid Vic, 17 - Butler fwd/mid Vic, 18 - Chesser mid/def Vic, 19 Van Rooyen KPF/D WA
Other than the number one pick Horne-Francis, the South Adelaide SANFL club also has another two players inside 17, that on top of a number of players taken last year. South haven't won a flag since 1964 but gee they are churning out U18 talent.Comment

2021 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel
I dont know hoe some red and whiters say the ladhams deal was ok. Firsly port refused out reequest in 2020 trade period and i am not sure if ladhams did too, The we swap our first rnd picks this year, didnt read anything about a fduture 2nd rounder. he didnt do much in the prelim against Footscray either and hasnt taken the rcuks apart. Why did port change in 2021 and di Ladhams change his mind as well.
You’re also a bit harsh on people changing their minds or circumstances changing - it does happen.
On Reid, I could only think the money saved with Dawson leaving is the only thing that is in his favour post the trade period - bringing in Ladhams would have to be a negative for him. If he’s happy to stay on a low salary and no promise of senior games, maybe he stays for similar reasons on retaining Sinclair.Comment

Before the start of the he was year was rated in the top couple but has had a shocking run with injury. Blistering pace and a lethal left foot . His run and carry off half back is as good as I’ve seen .
Sonsie is also a ripper and Van Rooyen a pretty versatile tall . Roberts a pretty good in and under mid .
So we should be able to get someone decent through the door with the first pick .

Wicks sounds like a done deal. I'd say BOC has shown enough to continue. The others will all be touch and go.
As it stands, we are five down from this year's roster (44) with some suggestion we might only go with possibility we might only go with 42 this year. We have picks 16, 31, 39, 70, 88 in the draft.
My gut says that Ronke will be de-listed. We will use picks 16, 31 and 39 (hopefully package 70 and 88 with one of the higher picks to slide up a few spots) then take McCartain in the rookie draft.Comment

Now that the trading period is over it appears that we have traded/de-listed 6 players with 1 player added. Longmile posted that "Ronke, O'Connor, Clarke, Bell, Wicks and Reid are all out of contract. There was some talk of Bell's contract being extended through a trigger clause but no one has confirmed and there was chat that Wicks was close to signing a 2 new yr deal." If this is the case then I think that they should retain O'Connor, Wicks, Reid, Bell only if his contract was extended and also Paddy McCartin.
i look forward to other poster's, e.g. Ludwig,, dejavoodoo44 etc, in their recommendations of potential draftees in the upcoming draft.Comment

I get it, the only game you’ve seen him play in was this year’s PF and you’ve written him off because he wasn’t BOG playing second ruck and up forward in a side that got smashed.

It appears Sam is holding by the end of his fingernails. There was no mention of another club being interested in him.Comment

Just didn't kick on did he ? Injuries played a big role sure but we saw snippets at times of a very good player, but not enough. His unreliability in front of goal must not be forgotten as well, but i'd be a loyal servant too for 400 - 500k a year ( or is it more ? ) ! Move on as we will need his money elsewhere. If we keep him yes as a KP back but on a very substantial reduced contract.
After that point, injuries have cruelled him every second season pretty much. But still, statistically 2017 and 2019 were right up there with what he managed in an outstanding year in 2012.
I think its harsh to have a jibe at him being a 'loyal servant' and tying it to his salary, like he hasn't done everything possible to maximise his time on the park. He just hasn't had a whole lot of luck in the 2nd half of his career. Not the first, nor the last for that to happen - but I've seen no evidence in any of that he has been a 'passenger' just trying to collect his paycheck, like some players become as injuries take their toll. His output of course has been impacted, but he has been a loyal servant to the club, and was a key cog of that 2012 grand final winning team. And while its nothing but a 'what if' scenario in the mind, he would of been a very handy in to that team in 2016 as well (and while zero criticism should be given to Xavier Richards and the efforts he put in that year - he wasn't a 10th of the player that Reid was at anywhere near his best form) and we might have seen a different result - perhaps."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

The last few years have shown a trend in my opinion.
1) The cost of living in Sydney is a factor, especially when players compare alternative costs in towns like Adelaide. No COLA will eat away at our competitiveness until changed.
2) Dawson never looked comfortable playing with us. No one doubts his footy skills, but his long term AFL career really hinges on his mental application. I think there is a risk there for us keeping him, and for Adelaide taking him. A 22 year old wanting to 'go home' is an unusual emotional request, especially from a young team on the up. His chances of premiership is much greater at Sydney than Adelaide.
For these reasons, I'm downgrading Dawsons free market value down from a "pick 10" to a "pick 14". If Melbourne finish 5th, which would be quite likely based on their last 5 years, then we have got fair value. I'm not going to sweat it anymore.Comment
