Sheldrick could develop but will take time. Same with Roberts. I guess when King talks about clearance beast he is thinking of big bodied players like Cripps, Tom Green etc. I am a Rowbottom fan too and I thought he was one of the players who really set the tone early against the Dogs. At this point though he does not have the size to be considered a beast. Players can build themselves up to it though. Look at Lachie Neale. When first drafted to Freo he was a lightly built mid but now has the strength and speed to really extract. That's what Rowbottom should strive for.
Although Rowbottom may be the 4th member of our current midfield quartet, he plays a very important role. He's our number 1 pressure player and 2nd in tackles, just behind tackling machine Mills. He's also 2nd in clearances behind Parker. Those numbers say he's doing a top notch job and not going anywhere. Totally uncompromising in his commitment to doing the team-first things. We saw that commitment in the goal saving bump when he got injured in the 1st qtr.Last edited by Ludwig; 11 July 2022, 07:52 PM.Comment

Shelterick was an accomplished extractor when drafted and was very physically mature for his age. Presumably he will be increasing that physical development while recovering.
If he does make it as an AFL player, he will make it very, very quickly.
I'd love to see the Swans pick up a young defensive giant, 200cm or there abouts - to help with all the 200cm+ forwards that are emerging.
I'd also like a couple of young ruck prospects. Hickey doesn't have that many miles on the clock so I can see no reason for him not to play on after his contract ends next season, which gives us time to grow one.Comment

Check out this list of players of 20 players we got over the past 4 drafts, and doesn't include recruits. 7 players were in the team on Saturday. I think another 7 will be AFL best 22 ready within the next 2 years. I find it hard to complain about our recruiting after looking at this list. Our hit rate is well above replacement requirements. For me, this is a macro-stat that indicates the direction the team is headed, and it's why I'm so positive about our list.
Blakey
Rowbottom
McInerney
Wicks
McLean
Stephens
Gould
Warner
O'Connor
McDonald
Campbell
Gulden
McAndrew
Sheather
Sheldrick
Roberts
Corey Warner
Rankin
P. McCartin

Media speculation Pies might be open to trading Grundy if they can get good offer for him, even though he has 5 years x $1m remaining on his contract. We could do with an A grade ruckman, but wouldn't even bother considering Grundy's form/injury and impact on Salary Cap. Let him continue chew up Pies salary cap as they also have to deal with JDG coming OOC. Hopefully it may result in them being put Into cap squeeze again and loose another Treloar for a bag of chips!Comment

JDG antics may save the Pies some money, Jordan has highly likely cost himself contract $ and years with his poor behaviour. Unless he goes to St.Kilda
I'm all for Taranto who may want to move east rather than back to MelbourneComment

It's a list of all the players, except Carruthers since the 2018 draft. I said that 14 were likely to be of AFL, including 7 who played over the weekend. That means I didn't commit to 6 players on the list. Rankin was one of those 6 players.
In any case, I am just projecting based on performance, how many players from these years will be AFL capable. I hope most will be good, because it would be good for the Swans. If it's more than 14, so much the better. If it's only 9, I will be disappointed, but it's no big deal if my guesswork falls short. It's just the kind of estimate list managers would have to make when deciding how to approach the draft. That's all.
A couple of years from now, I won't remember writing this comment. So if 14 players do make the grade, I won't be reminding everyone about it.
Feel free to take a crack at which ones you think will make it and which ones not. What do you think constitutes a good hit rate for drafting?Comment

Given that Taranto and Hopper have come up as players that Swans supporters would prefer to Dusty
I get this given we are loosing Kennedy maybe end oof this year end or next season
Given most estimates for Heeney is minimum $800k pa as at 2022 contract and it could be more?
Im super interested in how we would value a Taranto or a Hopper etc?
What is the expected range pa for these types of players?
Hopper (good Leeton NSW boy) has signed onto 2023 in which Free agency 2024 becomes real
If Hopper indicated he has a 4 year deal with another club and has no intention on staying once a FA would GWS let him shuffle on end of 2022?
He would be a serious acquisition and especially if he wanted to stay in Sydney and not play for a bunch of......
How do you value a player like this? and does he provide more certainty or higher probability of on field success vs our current roster?
Does a player like Hopper give more than a Dawson at $600k pa plus?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Hopper is a good hard player. We already have Mills who is a similar player but with strong leadership ability. Hopper is not the finisher that Dawson was. If we are in the market then I think we should be looking at someone who is an elite finisher. I'm not sure Taranto is an elite finisher either, albeit a very good player. maybe we should consider Baker from Richmond. He's tough and a good kickComment

Its interesting that in the history of GWS, we have yet to grab any of their players. The closest was Cunningham but he was a reject from their final culling of their list. Given how they have lost so many players over the years (mostly to Vic clubs), its surprising that not one has come our way. I know people will say its the go home factor to Victoria but not everyone wants to live there.Comment
