Would be great if Sheldrick/Roberts became as proficient as Tom Liberatore who is not overly big or quick but very proficient at what he does.

I dont think we need mids at all, our are just young. Most regular youngsters are overperforming given their age.
We need Mclean signed and a Key forward or defender or both, depending on whether he signs.
We dont need a 1st round pick, get the points for the academy kid and a couple other prospects.
Konstanty hasnt played yet, Sheldrick will be in the 22
A few decent guys in the 2s untried plus the 2 mid season recruits who could maybe play after a good pre season.Comment

A rock solid first posession player. Getting the ball out to our runners, the more explosive runners like Warner (Papley, Heeney) in close, the distance chanpions like McInerney (Gulden, Campbell, Stephens) out wider. Which leaves Mills and Rowy fulfilling a more defensive/disruptive role. Rowy in particular seems to love the junkyard dog work.
Roberts looks like another extractor to me so far, good hands strong body.Comment

one of our supporters recently suggested where is our next Kennedy type of player that we maybe able to attract? ie inside hard body to help our clearances.
I think that same supporter suggested that James Worpel is out of contract and only 24yrs of age but has now tallied up 100 games.
I dont think he is high on our radar, yet i think he would be a handy trade, not super expensive and would help our list exeperience.
BUT..........if you get a chance to click on this link below, you are in for a treat from one of the best mids I have ever watched play the game. Sam Mitchell goes into very micro detail in this post player feedback session (after playing us last season).

I don't think Warner is especially good as a first possession midfielder unless it gets tapped straight towards him by a ruckman (not necessarily ours). His best value is as a first receiver. I do think we lack a player consistently able to collect the first possession once it has hit the ground, or to shark a tap in traffic and get it out to someone in a tiny bit more space. But I hope Sheldrick and Roberts will be a large part of the solution to that once they become established in our midfield rotation. Gulden can win the ball on the ground, but it's not the best use of his talents or stature. Ditto Papley.
Parish would be competing with Sheldrick for a spot, and I’ve got great faith in Sheldrick. I think Parish is a good player, but I did a read a piece that sharply analysed his numbers over a couple of years between top eight sides and the rest, and it was quite stark.
As a right price player I’d take him, but I’m not sure I’d take him for the kind of deal it’d take to get him out of Essendon.
And like others on here, sad to hear the news re Paddy, but it’s great that he can now go live a happy, healthy life.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Parish might not be the answer we do have a few similar , but one of our biggest issues is clearances across the season . There will be natural growth from our young midfielders but will that be enough ?
For me we need another clearance midfielder, another tall defender and a Ruck .Our forward line looks ok to me as we have some depth in Buller , HHK and Konstanty . All though all pretty much untried I think it’s pretty good coverage across all bases

JPK was shifted out of the midfield because the coaches believed they could cope without his presence (and as you observe we did) and footspeed was an issue.
This year our midfield has not been coping as well.
A big bodied midfielder is a common suggestion for the difference, but I think the difference may be somewhat taller. Last season we got 27 games from our two ruckmen, this year we got 18 - and several where neither played.Last edited by Ruck'n'Roll; 15 August 2023, 05:49 PM.Comment

I'm a big Parish fan, just don't see him leaving Essendon.Comment

Sheldrick is very solid. Would weigh more than T. Libertatore who is a maestro as an extractor.Comment

Great analysis as always Liz.
I do think Papley is a good "first receiver" option (probably our best actually - last weekend had a couple of great examples), but I also think he has more value elsewhere. And that's certainly true of Gulden too - very capable, but I want him running a bit freer and using his laser boot capabilities to their maximum. We do need to find someone to fill this deficiency. Hopefully Sheldrick can oblige, and Rowbottom's continued development is very encouraging. My opinion is objective truth in its purest formComment
