Blakey could play anywhere. His most value at the moment is mad-as-cut-snake defensive runner.
Wouldn't surprise me to see him as permanent full forward at the end of his career

I'd be OK with him. I think he's a good tap ruck and decent around the ground. Grundy is better but Soldo is good and cheaper.

Spoke to him last weekend and his words “hope to get it done soon”. Mitchell said the same thing to a supporter at the B&F the year he left. Dawson said to a reporter the Swans supporters had nothing to worry about.

Perhaps Dawson was right. At the time he might have still wanted to remain a Swan. Or he was right in that the season after he left we made a grand final. If you were told at the start of 2022 you were guaranteed to be in a Grand Final, would you have taken that with such a young list and the departure of JD? Nothing to worry about indeed.

I like Hayden. I’m trusting him.

Sam Mitchell would be after him for sure me thinks and maybe also Saint Kilda as he was a Sandringham player also in their feeder area.

Beatson will have egg all over his face if McLean goes. Declared him a certainty but still not signed. It's getting late in the day. Only similar example I can think of is Lloyd who took at least as long to sign his latest deal.

Parker took a little while to ink his last contract IIRC.

Out of interest, apart from Dawson, who else have we lost that we wanted to keep? There are some we wanted to keep but moved on out of necessity for whatever reason

Forgot about Parker but was it as late as this?

Nic Newman (and Aliir Aliir) is in All Australian contention.

We have just Errol and Blakey in the team selector.

Re who we wanted to keep, I think we wanted Nank, Cameron and Membrey but couldn’t offer any of them enough game time.

That rather depends on what's meant by "we wanted to keep" - the club? Or us?
If the former, we'll probably never realy know. The club doesn't disclose that sort of information - leaks may surface some time later but they sometimes can't be trusted.
If the latter, I don't think there is a "we". RWO is a thousand schools of thought kind of place. For every player that leaves, there's some bemoaning the departure and others celebrating it.

Parker on 8 September. Plenty of time.

Bud, in the week of the Grand Final.

Just trust in the system. It generally works.

Who would Nic Newman replace on a HBF? Blakey- no, Florent- no, Lloyd- no.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

Hope you're right. Still got scar tissue from Dawson.

Precisely. Sure we wanted to keep Nank but we had Tippett, Sinclair, Derickx (both moneyball keepers) and the heir apparent Naismith. 20:20 hindsight says we should’ve kept Nank and Sinkers. But it’s far easier to make that decision with hindsight. At the time Nank wanted more game time and money. He could get that at Richmond and our ruck stocks looked promising.

Aliir similar. Did we (the club) want to keep him? Expect so. He had a year to run. But he had trade value and a destination he wanted. We did the best thing for player and clubs (well, with hindsight, maybe not our club, but in the role we used him he probably wouldn’t be the player he is today). Sliding doors.

In which case, the club doesn't disclose that sort of information. Leaks may surface some time later but their veracity is never beyond question. So not withstanding the earnest pronoucements by various RWOers as to what the club actually wants, will we ever really know.

Not arguing that we should (or should not) have kept Nic, but I think there's a bit on an issue with your argument Big Cat.
It doesn't take into consideration the prevelance of injuries. We are going to need more than 23 players on our list to win a flag, and that probably included more than 3 halfbacks.
