Sydney Swans 5.4 10.10 13.12 19.15 (129)
Hawthorn Hawks 1.1 3.5 9.6 13.7 (85)
Super Swans, frantic fans and Jetta?s jubilation make this victory one to savour.
A sunny Saturday afternoon at the SCG and the rowdy crowd were anticipating big things from their Swans who had suffered two of their worst defeats in recent history, losing the previous two weeks by a combined margin of 126 points. The Hawks were coming off a narrow loss to Port Adelaide after a hard fought draw with St Kilda and both teams were looking to secure their spot in the top eight. The Swans came out firing and put the game almost beyond doubt within the first quarter, inching one step closer to September and leaping over the Hawks to take seventh spot on the ladder.
The match started quickly as McGlynn snapped the opening goal for the Swans in his first appearance against his old side. Jack?s clearances and tackling were evident early as his free for holding the ball set up Goodes for the Swans? second while O?Keefe picked up the dangerous Hodge in a defensive forward role, although he sprayed his first shot. It was all Swans early as they dominated possessions and inside 50s with a 50m penalty against Goodes for a ?threatening? finger waggle giving the Hawks one of their only opportunities to score although Franklin missed. Jetta was threatening along the boundary as he missed his 17th shot at goal before White started to get involved.
White?s height stretched the Hawk?s relatively short defence and he used his immense body to crash the packs, resulting in a crumbing goal to Goodes. A beautiful tap from White to Moore in another contested marking situation led to the Swans? second goal in two minutes and their fourth for the quarter. A free against Pyke handed Roughead the Hawks? first and only goal for the quarter. The Swans sealed an impressive quarter with a length-of-the-ground goal to Trent Dennis-Lane after some clever tap work to himself which was set up by a lunging McGlynn tackle on Franklin at the opposite end of the ground. Jetta hit the post with a quick snap to send the Swans into the first change up by 27 with Jack leading the way with 11 possessions.
The Hawks looked momentarily threatening in the second term but after both Roughead and Franklin missed, McVeigh goaled on the run to only extend the Swans? dominance. Franklin hit the post after a free against Grundy who was doing an excellent job on the enigmatic forward and curbing nearly all of his influence on the game, pushing him up the ground and away from goals. Jetta missed another set shot to take his tally to 19 behind without a single goal; however the SCG crowd could feel something special brewing. Osborne missed for the Hawks before O?Keefe and Jack slammed two straight for the Swans.
Goodes missed a set shot before the Hawks finally broke through with some loose Swans defence handing defender Stratton his first goal in AFL football and only the Hawks? second for the match. Trent Dennis-Lane marshalled the troops at the other end and went back to kick his second before a dubious free kick handed Ladson and the Hawks another goal. However nothing could stop the Swans as Kennedy rolled a goal through on the half time siren to hand the Swans a formidable 47 point advantage heading into the main break. Jack was leading the way for the Swans with 21 classy possessions in what he has called the best half of football he has ever played. He had been ably supported by Grundy with 20 possessions and Kirk proved Aker wrong with 18 possessions to half time while performing a shut down role on Mitchell. Mitchell was well held by Kirk even though he was their leading possession winner with 11.
It was a much more committed Hawthorn team that came out after half time when the Hawks burst out of the blocks with two quick snaps to Bateman and Franklin. Lewis missed a set shot for the Hawks but redeemed himself only minutes later when he kicked truly from a free. O?Keefe rediscovered his kicking boots and snapped a goal to steady the Swans before Moss kick started the Hawks resurgence with a snap goal and Burgoyne unloaded from 50m to give the Hawks all the momentum. A Goodes mark and goal kept the Hawks at bay as Jetta was cruelly denied his first ever AFL goal when his kick (which was straight!) was judged after the siren. The Swans went into the last change 30 points up - Grundy, McVeigh and Jack leading the Swans? possession getters but Guerra, Mitchell and Burgoyne heading up the Hawks? revival.
White showed off his impressive speed for his first goal of the match to start the final term while Franklin began to make his presence felt. He missed a shot before kicking truly from the boundary and then securing his third of the match when he outmarked Grundy and slotted the goal. White sprayed another shot but was doing all the things of a burly full forward, crashing packs and creating contests for his midfielders. Jack set up McGlynn, who was lively, for his second of the day and O?Keefe sealed his demolition of Hodge with his fourth major as the best and fairest winner experienced a dramatic return to form.
Then came the highlight of the day ? as the ball rebounded off halfback, Mattner got on the end of it and instead of straightening up for goal he curled the ball to the pocket to find the free Jetta who, after White sheparded his player away, swung around to ... GOAL! Swans players came streaming from everywhere, the crowd erupted to a standing ovation and Paul Roos had to hold his bench players back as there were tears, cheers and celebrations for the young Swan after 15 games and a world record 19 behinds.
The final few minutes were a flurry of goals as Franklin pegged one back for the visitors before McGlynn kicked his third in an explosive match against the side who let him go. Roughead kicked the thirteenth and final goal for the Hawks before third-gamer Trent Dennis-Lane sealed the Swans? impressive win with his third goal after the siren. The Swans won by 44 points and it was a sweet victory to steady the Swans in the top eight with only three rounds to go. The Swans face the Dockers at Subiaco next week and if they can retain their commitment, effort and attack at the ball then they are a very good chance to notch up their 11th win of the season.

by joemoore12AFL Round 21 ? Sydney v St Kilda: Half Time Hero The more things change, the more they stay the same. This rings true for Swans supporters these days. We truly are a fortunate bunch. The winds of change have swept through the Sydney Swans like never before, yet we still get to cheer more often than jeer. A generation of Bloods heroes are slowly, but surely, moving on to the next chapter of their lives. Chapters that don?t necessarily involve us, the supporters. The game has changed. The g...

by joemoore12I am a simple man who enjoys simple pleasures. When the humdrum of a gloomy winter routine becomes a little mundane, it's time for a break. This year, my wife and I have opted for a trip from a chilly Hobart to the snow-laden, glacial wintry wonderland of Cradle Mountain. As per any dinky-di road trip, the supplies are plentiful, the stops are planned and the tunes are blissful. Life is all about the simple things and when your day includes visiting a proper country bakery and a cellar door wine...

by joemoore12When passengers boarded Virgin Australia Flight VA858 in Sydney last Friday afternoon. There was shock. There was horror. There was inconceivable confusion. There was a faceless man on board. 'Where is his face?' asked one bamboozled guest. 'He looks astonishingly boring' said another. 'No face, no hope' claimed a repulsed flight attendant. The Faceless Man is returning to a land where he once ruled with all the might of Julius Ceasar in Roman times. The snide remarks and puzzled sideways glances...

by joemoore12AFL Round 11 - Sydney v Geelong: Jumping Through (around, over and under) The Hoops For the past two weeks, I have revisited the bachelor lifestyle as my wife has been in the nation?s capital on a work assignment. My in-laws know all too well that my efforts to provide for myself have been questionable in the past, and so, offer a roast dinner which I simply cannot refuse. Tonight, the Swans play the Cats. My father-in-law is a proud Geelong man. In five years of knowing each other, and becomin...

by joemoore12AFL Round 16 - West Coast v Sydney: Where Were You? When the most credible of sources, 'Wikipedia' lists encounters between these two sides as an official rivalry, you know you're in for a serious afternoon of football. Fierce rivals over the past decade, the Swans and the Eagles have played out some high-stakes thrillers never failed to entertain. Whilst recent encounters have lacked the ferocity and tense finishes of previous battles, whenever these two modern-day giants meet, memories of past glo...

by joemoore12AFL Round 4 ? Sydney v North Melbourne: Minimum chips It?s not very often that you get to celebrate your birthday a month early. Fortunately for me, this year I did. As a gift from my wonderful wife, we flew from the Apple Isle to the Harbour City for a long weekend which included watching my beloved Swans take on The Enemy at the SCG. A true sporting icon, the Sydney Cricket Ground is without doubt my favourite place to visit. As a Swans supporter, there is no feeling like being surrounded ...

Highlights of the day.
Thanks Alison.
Brilliant write up Alison. Captured the day perfectly.
That TDL goal from the Jack kick was started by a brilliant tackle by McGlynn on Buddy. 2nd best goal of the day and my highlight for the day behind the obvious.
