I think the drawn grand final has really taken the focus away from trade week. The last few days have been very quiet. Anyone got any rumours too tide me over until next week?

Yeah, it has been quiet in comparison to the circus last year

Using what shall henceforth be known as "Bedfords Law" (a name that should be familiar to some RWO posters), I came up with the following list of players that the club may target this year:
      • Dogs: Stack
      • Crows: Petrenko
      • Hawks: Lewis, Ellis,
      • Cats: Mackie, Kelly
      • Saints: McQualter
      • Blues: Russell, Walker, Simpson
      • Demons: Bartram, Morton
      • Bombers: Lovett-Murray, Davey, Prismall, Jetta
      • Tigers: Edwards, Moore, Polo, Jackson
      • WCE: Kennedy, Rosa, Waters, Spangher
      • Lions: Drummond, Raines, McGrath

I removed from the original list, "stars" & players that AFAIK, have signed contracts with their clubs in 2010.

Not many KPDs in the list (bolded players are KPD "size"), most are midfielders.

The club has indicated that they are looking for more KPF depth & pace.

Does anyone see a player that could potentially slot into the Swans best 22 next year?

2010 AFL Trade dates have been modified.

It now starts next Tuesday (October 5) instead of Monday (October 4th).

The AFL Draft Combine (camp) starts tomorrow.

Jack Darling - a KPP prospect - who has been linked to the Swans in a couple of phantom drafts, will not take part in the physical tests on doctors orders (was assaulted a couple of weeks ago).

Wow I can't see Kennedy (WCE) being traded, though I'd love to have him at Sydney.

Just watched the youtube video from last year and this year and he does look big and he's a goer, he also has very good read of the play. His body doesn't seem to have improved from last year, same shape but whoever gets him could turn him into another J Brown just like the commentators said. Thumping lovely kick and accurate when taking a shot, but also not afraid to grab a quickie from play. NICE.

But would he be in our best 22, don't know!!

Speed and more speed would be my choice this year.

We really struggled without C Bolts and 2 Dads (LRT) this year, so do we need someone like this young man and groom him as a back man? Let him learn in the back and replace Bradshaw with him when he retires?

I do love all this speculation, don't you?

Short of us some how stumbling across a higher draft pick, I really can't see Darling falling to us.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Far more likely?? I hope you're correct but Schneider already has the runs on the board, would be in the best 22 at every team in the league, and at the age of 26 still has his best football ahead of him.

Meredith has looked OK in glimpses but nothing to suggest he will be anything more than a good ordinary player, he will need a big 2011 to retain his spot on the list IMO.

In his defence he has been pretty injury prone thus far and may not have had the chance to show his true talent, but there are plenty of hard luck stories in the AFL (Schmidt, James, Doyle etc)

Getting rid of Schneider was in retrospect I believe a mistake but at the time seemed reasonable as he had seemed to have stagnated and other younger players seemed to be coming through who could take his place but unfortunately no one in my opinon has yet filled that small forward role as well as he did. Its the same with buchanan (ie he had stagnated) yet both were crucial parts of our 2005 premiership. Brisbane can only hope that Buchanan comes on like Schneider did.

I guess I always took the view that schneider was a better player than buchanan - buchanan was harder at it but his disposal was never as good as schneiders - and schneider also played some ok games as a back pocket. when it came time to suggest a trade at the end of 2007 i saw them as virtually the same player competing for the same spot and i thought getting rid of schneider rather than buchanan was the right decision but they were pretty similar so i trusted the coaches.

however i don't think i properly realised just how quickly buchanan would lose form - and the demise of the dinky little 15 m pass cost buchanan a lot of his creative skills.

anyway i still think it was a dud deal for us and good for the saints.

The argument that Schneider stagnated with us is rubbish. In fact 2007 his last season with us was statistically his best for the Swans, and was actually superior to his output in 2008 and 2009 for the Saints.

Tough calls should have been made on Crouch Mathews and Ablett whose careers were all on downward trajectories and were all gone from the AFL by the end of 2009.

As I've stated before I'm pretty sure salary cap issues were the main reason that Schneider and Dempster were cut. It is too simplistic to say we should have cut Crouch, Mathews and Ablett without knowing what their contract statuses were. Those 3 had less trade currency (if any) than the Schneider and Dempster and would have been harder to move on.

I find it hard to believe that we would have broken the salary cap given our concessions, but if so its another example of mismanagement.

Not sure about contract statuses but agree that none of those 3 had any currency at the trade table and should simply have been cut if out of contract. Spida was also on a healthy contract for the 2008 season which wasn't warranted considering his onfield output.

All in all it was a massive stuff up on the part of the club, there is no defending it

The salary cap issue was only raised by the media, and I don't think the club ever commented directly on it. It was most likely linked to the 2 consecutive GFs triggering performance clauses in a lot of the players' contracts. Jude was heavily shopped around then, and the article below also said Monty was in the window as well.

Lyon chases Schneider, Dempster - AFL - Fox Sports

The idea was for Moore initially and then later on Veszpremi to be the replacement at half-forward and Mattner straight in for Dempster as a stopper/half-back and the club would have been comfortable with that setup, feeling they would have lost little to nothing.

Oh well I guess I have to stop banging on about it, its just that Schneids and Dempster were both faves of mine.

I guess I'll just have to take comfort from the fact that we did the same to Hawthorn with Benny and Josh in last years trade period!!!
