    this is getting hard
he isnt playing an extra year for nothing
    current contract 2018 on is 800k 0k 0k
    im suggesting he goes 600k 500k 400k
more job security and a sacrifice upfront to keep teammates together
this is quite common practice and not out there "logic"
your suggesting 800k then 200k plus mp
what is the big dif here ?????

i reckon his manager would jump at a fixed contract over his client being fit enough in 2 yrs time for a match payment contract

$200k plus is crazy money for someone who spends less time on the park than the runner. Why not pay him the absolute minimum to stay at home and watch You Tube clips of the player he was at the Crows. We then use the savings to invest in a player who turns up.

Apparently if his name is Kurt Tippett. But not if his name is Alex Johnson.

No it isn't. However, it is a player's fault if he gets selected to play, runs around, and does not perform his assigned role.

If you think AJ is going to solve problems you are delusional. Five years out. Not even JC could make a come back after that layoff. AJ will return, play a couple of games and then retire.

People have been overly optimistic about AJs prospects this year. But Daniel Menzel is playing now after 4 knee reconstructions.

I've been thinking about which players might be delisted at the end of the year. We're a long way out but this is my current thinking:

? Macca - will depend on his injuries and form; may also depend on whether we lose Reid and/or Jones and, if we do, whether we have any targets from other clubs in mind to replace them. I think the more experience we lose, the more we will consider keeping him but only if he can still go alright.
? BJ - I like BJ. He's smart and he works really hard and he has continued to improve. However so far he hasn't really shown signs that he has what it takes to do more than excel in the NEAFL.
? Leonardis - hasnt yet won his debut. Isnt exactly tearing it up in the NEAFL at the moment and isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Maybe we'll persevere but if his form doesn't improve i'd consider moving him on and giving his spot to somebody else.
? AJ - if we don't have some concrete basis to suppose he is going to play good footy again and not be injured again we may have to cut him.

If he wasn't contracted for another year I'd have my sights on Rose too. After promising early signs he has lately been disappointing, especially defensively. If he hasn't improved and there is an option to trade him we should seize it. Else he's lucky he's got another year to show something.

At this stage all the rookies have shown enough to warrant at least another year. That may change but, if not, that is excellent news and kudos to our recruiters.

Reid has been a tease for most of his career, and has a relatively fragile body.

If letting him go to a Melbourne club will get us a first round compensation pick....I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I'm still gutted we let Nankervis slip through our fingers....Especially after already letting Mummy go.

He and Naismith would of complimented each other really well and may well have become the best double act in the comp.

If Tippett continues to underperform, there is no way we should keep him beyond his current contract.

As for Sinclair , he is nothing but an average backup.

We need to find a new ruck/forward soon, to go in tandem with Naismith...Fingers crossed Cameron offers something.

Jones is quickly becoming the most promising young midfielder on our list (along with Heeney), I love the way he goes about it....IMO we should make him our absolute priority.

AFL pay deal to drive massive salary cap increase

Maybe we will have a bit extra to offer, given the reports in this piece.

Agreed a player can't help injury, I think you'll find performance when on the park v pay packet is the big bugbear with KT. In any case I doubt AJ is taking up much salary cap room

All these articles and speculation are mostly filling the media void given the lack of contract renewals, due to the delays in finalising the new CBA.

Once that's done, we have the advantage with Jones and Reid of making concrete offers - while other clubs are still testing the waters with Martin, Fyfe, and even the likes of Schache etc. No club is going to make massive, unconditional offers to a Reid or Jones in June when there is still so much to play out in the market in the next few months. It would have to be attractive to accept a good offer from us now, even if you thought you could get a bit more elsewhere at the end of the year, to guarantee your future. What would Sam Reid's worth be if he breaks down again, or Jones did an ACL later in the year - while holding off signing a slightly-better contract elsewhere?

It would just be a merry-go-round across the whole comp for all decent players if it was just a fait accompli that players always took the highest offer available from other clubs each time they came out of contract - even recently the likes of Hannebery and Heeney rejected massive offers. Nankervis left for opportunity and Mitchell hit the jackpot coming off contract at the time another club was absolutely desperate for the exact type of player he is. I don't see other clubs being as desperate for the likes of Reid or Jones.

I think we just have to trust that recent decisions have factored-in the need accommodate offers to Reid and Jones - I'm sure that was part of not going over-the-odds for Mitchell. We have also been offering average players 2-3 deals in recent times where we could have let their contracts run out and maybe pay a bit more for 1-year deals (Laidler, Cunningham, B.Jack etc), and got in early with the likes of Allir, and even more recently Darcy Cameron - which I think helps keep down the cost while maintaining some reasonable depth.
