Seems logical, but there are other possibilities. We are going to have to move some value points from 2021 to this year. We continue our record in losing every deal we make involving a ruckman. How can we give away more for Hickey than we got for Nankervis?

Aliir does seem like a salary dump. It was probably either Aliir or Hewett. Who knows, it could be both. Bad deal aside, we have the depth in defence to cover the loss of Aliir. It also opens the possibility that we might take DGB in the draft if it comes down to him or Hollands.

I would take Vardy way before Hickey as he is far more versatile, and we get a ruckman to boot. QED.

Bloody hell - Hickey played 3 games this year and is 30 in March - would have rather got Preuss but I don't even think we chased him. We may as well have kept Knoll and gave him a go for no cost or salary cap pain.

We only look at a trade in isolation, the club has plans that go out a number of years and all that has to factor in TPP which no one is privy to.

The Franklin contract was locked in stone as Buddy was a RFA. I can tell you with absolute certainty that Buddy gets $1.5 mill in 2021 and $1 mill in 2022. Those amounts will of course be reduced by whatever the TPP reduction is.

But even $1.5 mill is not much more than Dusty at Richmond, Fyfe at Freo, Cripps at Carlton.

Aliir in isolation looks a poor deal but it depends what we do from here trying to limit deficits next year and strengthening our hand in next years Super draft.

The ruck depth problem continues of course, Vardy would be cheap and free if that's where we've got to but there's no easy solutions to rucks.

I'm not going to pass judgement on the Aliir trade just yet, maybe we are intending to take DGB at pick 3 and therefore Aliir is expendable? Who knows. Save judgement until after the trade period and draft.

            From Wikipedia
"After six years and 67 games with the Saints, Hickey was traded to the West Coast Eagles at the end of the 2018 season for pick 39 and West Coast's 2019 fourth-round selection"

He is now 2 years older having played 23 games in 2 years. Jesus....

Aliir - gone and that is the part A. Guess a next year round 40 is points in the bank or a trade plan we know little about. Definitely need a tall / ruck of some description now!

Time to sack a few people!

Harley, what have you done for this club??

But Beatson, the last couple of years has show you have totally lost it!

Your trading is the laughing stock of the AFL.

Zac Jones, a first rounder, (15), age 25, traded out in his prime for pick 32.

AA, pick 44, age 26, traded out in his prime for most likely pick 40-44.

Years of work put into players, just thrown out the window.

Could a rookie pick replicate a seasoned player, no.

We need a ruckman, so who do we go for, Hickey; but if we can't get him, Vardy??

WTF; these two are some of the most ordinary ruckmen in the league!

But why do we not have any half decent ruckmen on our list??

Because Beatson always recruit medium forward/midfielders.

And the endless useless cast off from other clubs, Grey, Thurlow, Taylor, Clarke may be good for depth but is not elite.

Will any of these players reach 100 games for us: absolutely not! But how much are they costing us in salary??

Our chairman Andrew Pridham has called for an inquiry into the AFL, perhaps he should put one into our club?

He has been on the board since 2004, perhaps he should start looking at why so many players are leaving our club for peanuts.

We had to sign Heeney and Mills a few years back to ward of the kangaroos . I bet that’s where most of the salary issues are . Also Rampe , Parker Lloyd would be on decent coin , add Buddy in the mix and it’s a perfect storm . Look at Collingwood there in a world of hurt due to back end contracts

Maybe, but we did offer Big money for Darcy Moore, Langdon and rumoured Ryder

                              This is pathetic.

Playing Aliir out of position firstly and now trading him. Criminal.

I don't think it was the CEO, Football Manager or List Manager who would have initiated or pushed for any of these moves. If the coach doesn't value the players that highly, then that dictates how hard to go to re-sign the player, and/or whether you are open to trading them out.

Longmire clearly doesn't rate Aliir - the last 4 years is evidence of that (I don't think he had that high of an opinion of Zac Jones either) - so whether any of us agree with that assessment or not, nothing was going to magically change next year. So we may as well trade out a player if they are not in the coach's plans, and you can understand the player being open to moving now. The reality is Aliir was not going to reach the potential many supporters believe he has under Longmire - I guess we'll see how he goes at Port and that might be the evidence either way.

Melican is more the style of key defender Longmire wants - hence the new 3-year contract for him. I don't see the Aliir move as a salary dump - our cap would be tight, but just as much the squeeze for list spots and making the tougher calls on players who realistically are fringe players. That might give us more flexibility to look at some delisted free agents who suits our needs more.
