Median is more important than average as the baseline in this industry, as it is not a natural distribution. Some players earning 750K plus (as much as $1.3 million for Dusty) means most average to decent players earn below the average.Comment

Correct Mal, averages are usually quoted for a range of things in life, but median is the figure that should be used.Comment

Correct, and this is where things like incentives come in for lower paid players like Fox'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Our cobbled together backline of ex-forwards, ex-outside mids and rookies is performing magnificently.
However I think you are under-rating our forwards - Papley and Heeney are stars at 26y.o. Hayward is a very good player at 23; McDonald has enormous upside and is 20.
It is not outrageous to suggest McLean/Amartey could become a regular AFL player. Not a star, but maybe to the standard of Dan McStay/Ben Brown.Comment

How many clubs have as many players on long contracts as us? Currently we have Heeney, Mills, and now T. McCartin all signed up for 5+ years. Even with GWS they have Coniglio, Whitfield and Kelly signed on long term deals but do they all have 5+ years to go after this season. (No point counting those who are at the end of those deals, like Buddy.)
Personally I have a high level of confidence both in our list managers and in those players so I'm not unhappy - but we've seen how long contracts have become a millstone around the necks of some clubs e.g. Brodie Grundy at Collingwood).
It gives me some comfort that (1) probably those players are not on absolute top dollar (like Buddy, Dusty, Grundy and the GWS trio - although it's hard to be certain with Heeney and Mills); and (2) all of those players are not valuable for their playing ability alone - they also are leaders of the club or have leadership futures (possibly query in relation to Heeney). All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

I'd also like to see Florent transplant his dancing feet out of the restrictions of the defensive zone and into the middle over the next few seasons. He's stronger. He's tougher. And he's learned so much more about operating in tight spaces. And for a player who's kicking (or decision making) was sometimes suspect as recently as a season and a half ago, he's recently been one of our most accurate kicks into the forward 50 on the too rare occasions he finds himself up the ground.Comment

Long term contracts are set and forget on the spreadsheet, particularly good when they are rock solid Swans to the core players like we've signed.
Liz, you mentioned possible future back line changes. We will of course have younger players needing to take up those running defender roles, so Blakey and Florent could well be moving forward. Now he's matured Blakey could become a nightmare match up as a roaming forward, Florent as one of the CBA's. You have to continuously improve and evolve, but haven't we come with a rush this year.Last edited by 707; 8 September 2022, 06:18 PM.Comment

I wish we had a salary cap like Richmond who can have players like Lynch and Dusty on mega deals and then can apparently still afford to bring in GWS stars, Taranto and Hopper, on big contracts. Call me a cynic but I'm pretty confident they have found a way to circumvent the Cap - probably through sponsor- connected payments in kind.Comment
