Any trade where you're giving up two senior players for the one (second round) draft pick is questionable at best.

I thought it was common knowledge that Schneider and Dempster were cut for salary cap reasons? We tried to move Jude but no one bit at the asking price of a first round pick?Comment

How is the Schneider trade a win/win? The Saints picked up 2 of our players that look like they will play > 100 games each, Meredith hasn't shown much in his 3 seasons to date and if he continues with his current injury strike rate in 2011 there's a fair chance he'll be delisted
Meanwhile, Schneider had stagnated. He's a good player, but needed a change of scenery to come into his own.
Now, the way the trade went, we traded Marty Mattner into the side, for a second round pick, and trading Schneider and Dempster to the Saints for their second rounder was a way of replacing that second round pick. So essentially, it was Matter for a stagnant Schneider and a player who wasn't going to get games with us. Mattner's decision making has been questionable at times, but he has been a best 22 player every year since coming here, his best has been brilliant, and he has served us very well.
I'd call Schneider and Dempster for Mattner win/win, definitely.Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!Comment

The armchair list managers @ BF reckon Dean Polo - Richmond [24yo, 56 games, 187cm / 83kg, Mid/ Fwd/HBF] for a late pick is on the cards...any takers? The Swans Fan Zone on

That's not the right way to look at it. Dempster would not be getting a game at the Swans right now, and wouldn't have since we traded him. I know the Saints are a better side, but he plays the very specific role of small defender. Smith, Bevo, Mattner, Malceski, Kennelly, Craig Bolton, etc.

In terms of salary cap, we kept Mathews, Ablett and Crouch who all could have (and should have) been cut before Schneids/Dempster. The fact is that we have been crying out for a small forward since Schneider left and he would easily be in our starting 18, in fact he was never really out of it . Demptser may be a 50/50 proposition but i personally thought he was hard done by in his last season. He actually plays tall and short and had a 29 possession game in his last season
I guess it's done now and doesnt mattter, but for anyone to suggest it was a good trade is kidding themselvesComment

Well no, they are completely different trades. We could have simply traded our 2nd rounder for Mattner and kept the other 2.

I never said anything about the decision to trade Dempster, which even though they were sold as a '2 for 1' deal in the particular trade reached, is a completely separate issue. Always against it at the time, as I always rated Dempster; but the fact is that he's continued to be a marginal selection at St Kilda, and he still doesn't gather enough possessions and impose himself on the game enough.
Of course, I hope that both of them have a premiership medal around their neck next Saturday evening. But that's another argument.Comment

I hope there is some plans in place to get someone else if we trade White. If Bradshaw doesn't come good fitness wise next season Jesse would be very handy to have as who else will fill the role. Also KP players are hard to come by. He hasn't been setting the world on fire, but he is still only young for a KPP and has some good experience and is physically capable. Would hate to see him develop and kick bags against us in the future, but if they want to trade him good luck to him against all other clubs.Comment
