But most importantly what do u want to happen mattW ?

What does our team need to be significantly better in 2019 ?
    Not a massive amount.

Mills, Reid, Naismith, Mellican back will make us much better and go a long way to addressing our deficiencies forward and back this year.

We need ball-winners and more explosive runners through midfield, which will enable Hayward and Ronke to play forward more. Clarke will help; Harley has already declared him best 22. Mills will play midfield, but it remains to be seen whether he is a ball-winner - I have my doubts. Jones will also play as a outside runner in an important role.

If we do improve our threat forward (through Reid, Sinclair (as second ruck), Hayward/Ronke playing forward more, McCartin after another preseason), then Heeney and Parker can play midfield more and improve our ball winning.

So, I really want Tom Langdon to free up Jones and Mills, as Harley says. He also looks to have grit and intelligence. That aside, I'd be happy enough with Blakey and the best with what we have left in the draft.

Note we have Stoddart and Ling, two more outside runners, which will hopefully come on in the next year or 2.

And to be honest he has.

More than Nick Smith could ever dream of. But that's not the point

To take six picks to the draft we need six vacant spots on our list, because we run under at 38 spots, we need four vacancies which we now have and four is all we'll fill anyway, that's Blakey (26 + 28) plus three. Makes picks 40 & 67 tradeable to upgrade one of our picks in the 30s or something like 33 & 40 for Dogs pick 27, lifts our pick and gives Dogs 200 more points for Rhylee West.

Plenty more to go and aren't we all happy with the cracking rollicking pace this year, unlike previous years funeral processions!
Before coming into this trade period we delisted Towers + Foote + Styles + Brown = 4 + AJ + Tippett = 6 list vacancies?

Brown, Styles and AJ were all on the rookie list, not the main list (and its the size of the main list that's relevant to how many players a club takes in the National Draft). Whether Tippett remains on the list next year or not will depend upon salary cap constraints, though you'd think they'd be able to juggle payments between years to bring all of his into the current year (and push someone else's payments back a year) if necessary to free up that list spot.

So thus far we've just lost Towers, Rohan, Foote and maybe Tippett from the 38. Newman's in limbo and Hannbery will almost certainly be traded out. Robinson hasn't yet been mentioned as re-signed or delisted and I guess his future awaits the end of the trade period, when the club can assess how many list spots it has and how many picks it wishes to take in the ND.

Remember that two of the vacated spots have already been filled by Ronke and Clarke.

Re Gary, and Emma's prediction that he'd fill up many a highlight reel. Yes, she was right, but it would have been more impressively prophetic if she'd mentioned he'd also fill up a lowlight reel - of injuries. Being a Melbourne based fan, the most vivid recent memories belong to both the highlight and lowlight reels just from the MCG. The concussion he suffered against Carlton last year; how unbelievably long it took for the game to stop and have Gary attended to, and how dreadful a wait it was just to be reassured that he hadn't broken his neck. Kicking the sealer against Richmond later in the season. That unbelievable mark in the dying moments of our win against Hawthorn this year when he looked down, sprinted to cover the ground, and looked up to take an incredible mark. Didn't one of the commentators say it was degree of difficulty 99 point nine, nine? Then he kicked it to Ronke for Ronke's seventh and an unbelievable victory. Gary, you go with my blessing. Have a fine career with the Cats, except when you play against us!

Re Nick, isn't he just one game off an incredible record of his own - longest sequence of games without a Brownlow vote?

I don't think that we should get too excited about Langdon joining us yet. He is still a big chance to re-sign at Collingwood or even join his brother at Freo. His brother was voted Best Clubman there this year.

While we're hoping pick 26 will do the job to secure Tom Langon should he nominate us, this AGE article seems to initimate A combination of picks 26, 28 & 33 will be required to secure Blakey and we may have to use St Kilda's anticipated 2019 2nd round for Hannebery to do so?

Some astute number crunchers here had calculated picks 33, 38, 40 & 67 should be enough to cover Blakey (assuming we also use 28 to trade in another player).

Not sure if the AGE is reckoning Langdon is worth more than pick 26 or they need a lesson in draft points strategy?

Nope. Took the record previously held by Tom Lonergan (209 games) and is now 2 games clear

So Damian Barrett says Dayne Beams is making a play to get back to Collingwood and only Collingwood. That might make them keen to do the Langdon trade.

Yep 33,38,40,67 gets us equal to 5th draft pick on points

I would be absolutely amazed if Blakey goes at 5 or less

That gives us 26 and 28 to really go after a player or two that will help our 2019 season a lot

When we look at what has worked for Bulldogs, tigers and pies under the current rules it has been to lock in the oppositions arc as much as possible and apply massive pressure

We have generally preferred being happy to jam up our defence and break from there the last two seasons in particular and that has suited our slow back line

If we want to be able to apply high pressure at both ends of the ground we still need another one or two run and carry type players

So for me let’s use one of our picks 26 or 28 to get a fast mid / winger outside player.

                        26 for Tom Langdon

28 for a ed Langdon type player

To get an ed Langdon type player for example would probably take pick 28 and a 2nd round pick next year as he is emerging as a very exciting player (next year pick from St Kilda hannes trade)

Beams doesn't come to play without a sizeable contract so given they had to up the Moore contract to keep him and that Langdon's current offer is unders, they may well have incentive to move Langdon on.

Pies don't have a lot of picks either and their NGA gift Isaac Quaynor is touted mid teens and Beams is their pick 18 at a minimum so they'll need trade currency THIS year.

On the main list numbers, we run 38 which is two under the allowed 40. So 38 minus Tippett, Towers, Rohan, Foote & Hannbery makes it 33 plus Ronke, Clark makes it 35, reckon we'll take four at the draft using up to pick 40 so maybe one more casualty or two if Langdon comes in. Still numbers to crunch and pick trading to do. Intersting trade period, the whiteboard in that locked room at the Swans would be an interesting view!

                            WOW.
                            Billy Slater to St Kilda.
Oh dear... he's going to teach them how to tackle.

Remember when we used to train with the Eastern Suburbs NRL club, and our tackling was the BEST in the competition... St Kilda are going to surpass this.

                            This is a massive coup.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

                              Hi mattW

I have a different perspective re what we need

Collingwood GWS and the hawks had as many players injured as we did through out 2019

We will all have similar amount of important players returning

GWS players are about to absolutely go to the next level ie there are so many high draft pick players that will lift again and at great ages to dominate week in week out

We need more then Ryan clarke
We need more then the depth and young guys emerging

I think we need at least another two minimum players that will make a significant difference to our team and ensure we can play with more flexibility in our game plans

There are some serious players gone or going 2019 and beyond and because of Blakey academy pick and trading rohanand hannes and Tippo contract no gone we have a window this year to trade well

Let’s use picks 26 and 28 and hannes deal to get what we need

Going 2019 and next couple of seasons:
                              Grundy
                              Macca
                              Jack
                              Smith

                              Gone:
                              Hannes
                              Rohan
                              Tippo

The one main thing missing from our team is the 2016 version of Hannebery. I blame Easton Wood.
