Net gain of 395 points

395 points equates to a pick 42, a third rounder. So the trade ends up roughly being a swap of Aliir for Hickey. It also facilitate the movement of points from next year to this year without using our 2021 2nd rounder, which has some value in its own right. We can probably go into the draft with the picks we have and wait to see when Gulden gets bid on before deciding if we need to move and more points forward. We might be able to trade down our 2nd round picks to get more points.

We lost some player value, but we fixed a few problems, one positional and some for the draft. It's not that negative in a broader view of what our needs are.

Maybe, but why then (allegedly) trying to offload Hewett?

Squeeze for Hewett as well.....Warner, Stephens, Gulden, Campbell, McInerney, Rowbottom, Florent, Parker,Kennedy, Blakey,Heeney, Mills, Clarke.....potentially even Hollands? playing through midfield.....I don't see Hewett as someone who can play half forward

I have watched a lot of Hickey in his early years because my partner is a Saints supporter. He can at least direct the ball to his own team mates which is an upgrade on Sinclair. He is also a good kick and dangerous around goals. He will be serviceable.

Poor return on AA though.

To keep pick 3 and still get Campbell and Gulden without too much damage for next year something had to give. If Aliir had gone as a RFA next year, people would be dreaming if they thought the compo would be any better than a pick somewhere in the second round

GWS got pick 31 for Corr on a 6 year deal worth 550k, we may have got a 3rd round pick for Aliir if he left next year as a free agent. Honestly with everyone fit next year I didnt see Aliir as a first 22 player.

Lets compare Brand vs Aliir.....I don't see too much difference.

Melican, McCartin, Brand, Rampe, Fox, Dawson, Gould......all potential KPD

I for one would have been happy to hold for a year and risk a compo pick which would have been similar.

Peter Wright was traded for a future 4th round pick, i would taken Wright as a straight swap for Aliir

I think people forget two things with this deal. Hickey is a reasonable tap ruckman (no star, but better at it than Sinclair), and if you watched our midfield in rd1 when Naismith played, a good tap ruckman makes a substantial difference.

That is structural problem number one.

And Sinclair is better as a forward, pinch hitting in the ruck. And given the uncertainty over Bud's body, Reid's variability, and the shift of McCartin to defence (apparently), we have freed him up to play more forward.

That is structural problem number two.

Yes, we had to give a bit, but sometimes you have to. And we did so in a way that kept us pick 3, and boosted points for the academy bids.

totally agree, Hickey is a much better tap ruckman than Sinclair. I think Mclean will be delisted and Sinclair will be our FWD/RCK option when Reid/Franklin are unavailable.

I'd like to see us pick up P McCartin now as well.

Hopefully we can have some sort of forward line from Franklin, Reid, P McCartin and Sinclair.

In the end, I think the trade outcome is okay. I'd be the first to admit I'm not objective, particularly with someone like AA. I love watching him play (except when he has a case of the fumbles). We have plenty of defensive cover too. I still think AA is a better player then what we received for him.

If we can walk away with a ruckman, gun player at pick 3, and two highly rated academy boys with a possible Paddy McCartin thrown in, I think we've done okay.
